| Abstract | 동양의 농업사회에서 생명이 ‘대지’를 표준적 이미지로 하여 ‘자연화’되고, 생명의 본질은 ‘순환성’에 있었던 데 비해서, 서양의 농업사회에서 생명은 ‘영혼’을 표준적 이미지로 하여 ‘의인화’되며, 생명의 본질은 ‘합목적성’에 두어져 있었다. 그리고 산업화 이전에 일종의 완충 역할을 했던 생기론의 사유에서는 ‘감각성’으로서의 생명력을 생명의 원리로 삼았다. 이에 비해 산업사회에서는 ‘기계’를 표준적 모델로 생명관이 성립되며, 생명의 본질은 ‘환원성’과 그것의 귀결인 ‘조작가능성’‘이용가능성’‘상품화가능성’ 등에 있었다. 그러던 것이 생태계 위기의 시대인 오늘날, 생태학에서는 생명이 ‘네트워크’를 표준적 이미지로 하여 시스템화 되며, 생명의 본질은 ‘상호의존성’을 대표로 ‘순환성’과 ‘항상성’에 있는 것으로 간주된다. 불교 역시 네트워크적인 ‘그물’을 생명의 표준적 이미지로 하며, ‘상호의존성’에 의거한 ‘순환성’과 ‘항상성’을 생명의 본질로 여긴다. 특히 불교적 의미의 생명인 연생(緣生)과 비생(悲生)으로서의 중생(衆生)은 생명의 본질인 상호의존성을 상호존중성으로 확대시킴으로써 생태계 위기 해소에 유용한 생명 사고의 방식을 제공해 준다고 볼 수 있다.
In the Eastern agricultural society the life was naturalized with the normal image of the earth, and the essence of life was regarded as the circularity. In the Western agricultural society the life was anthropomorphized with the normal image of the soul, and the essence of life was regarded as the teleonomy. And in the vitalistic thought to function as a shock-absorbing before the industrialization, the sentience as the life force was the principle of life. But in the industrialistic society the view of life was established with the normal image of the machine, and the essence of life was the reductionity, manufacturability, utility, and the commoditability. And then today at the age of the ecological crisis, in the ecology the life is systematized with the normal image of the network, and the essence of life is the interdependence, circularity, and homeostasis. And also in the Buddhism the life is symbolized with the normal image of the web, and the essence of life is the interdependence, circularity, and homeostasis. Especially the Buddhist life, the sattva (together arising) as the dependent arising and compassionate arising expands the interdependence to the interrespect, and so it offers a way of life thinking to be useful to the solution of the ecological crisis.
