| Abstract | 불교생태학에 대한 많은 문헌들의 공통적인 출발점은 다음과 같은 2개의 측면에 있다고 보인다: 첫째, 불교와 생태학은 독립적이며, 동․서의 생태학자들은 불교의 종교적 영향력을 빌어 환경개선에 이바지하려고 한다. 둘째 불교의 핵심교리인 緣起는 주로 상호의존적/상호연관적으로 해석되고 동시에 가치개념을 이미 포함하고 있는 것으로 판단된다.
그러나 불교생태학의 이 두 측면은 연기가 가치개념이 배제된 존재구조의 記述이라는 점과 그 정확한 관계론적 해석을 도외시하였기 때문에 생긴 것이다. 불교생태학에서 필요한 급선무는 환경과 인간, 인간의 제반 활동들간에 항상성 유지를 위한 유기체적 순환조절시스템의 모형을 개발하는 것이다.
연기의 이중적인, 즉 전체를 분할할 때 생기는 내재적 관계와 부분을 조합할 때 생기는 외재적 관계를 이용, 우리는 자연 및 사회의 현상을 설명하고 예측하는 데 필요한 두 종류의 분류체계 및 변화체계를 구성할 수 있다. 유기체적 분류․변화체계의 모형으로서 음양오행은 이 두 체계가 서양의 자연과학적 모형과는 달리 서로 분리불가능하다는 점에 있다. 바로 이 점을 바탕으로 음양오행론의 핵심인 상생과 상극이 재구성이 가능하며, 궁극적으로는 생태학에서 직접 응용할 수 있는 유기체적 순화조절시스템의 모형이 적어도 이론적으로는 개발 가능하다.
Many ecological studies of Buddhism seem to have two kinds of aspects in their starting point. The first is that even though the ecological thinkers both in the west and the east consider Buddhism as an independent one from ecology, but they want to borrow the religious influence of Buddhism for contributing to environmental improvement. The second is that they interpret the teaching of pratītyasamutpanna(緣起說), the essential doctrine in Buddhism, as interdependent or interconnected one, and consider the doctrine as a value-laden one, viz., something including axiological notion already. These two aspects, however, arise from neglecting the fact that the teaching of pratītyasamutpanna is a description of the structure of existence apart from its axiological implication, and they did not try to interpret it exactly in terms of the theory of relation.
The urgent need of the hour in the ecological studies of Buddhism is to develop a organic model for feedback control system to sustain homeostasis between environment and human beings or human activities. For this purpose, I would like to propose two kinds of system of classification and system of change, which are necessary for every scientific explanation of processes of nature and society. In the course, I used two kinds of relationship implied in the structure of pratītyasamutpanna: internal relation by partition of the whole and external relation by configuration of the parts.
As an (traditional) organic system of classification and change, the theories of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements(陰陽五行說), as different from the western systems, does not divide classification and change into two independent processes but treat them as an organic whole. On the basis of this point, it is possible to reconstruct the two essential principles of the Yin-Yang and the Five Elements system, ‘mutual production(相生)’ and ‘mutual conquest(相剋)’, and an organic model for feedback control system, at least in theory, can be developed. |
