AbstractEver Since Buddha said his Enlightment, the history of interpretation has started in Buddhism. Silla scholiast Wonhyo, whose Buddhist exegetical writing is so voluminous and varied, is one page of this Buddhist history of interpretation. Hwajaeng(和諍)is regarded as his characteristic exegetical method. This article aims at detailing the hermeneutical structure of hwajaeng through comparing with modern theories in Hermeneutics.
The properties of Hwajaeng as Wonhyo's Hermeneutical strategy can be summarized as follow ; ① Hwajaeng has the circulative relation to Hwetong(會通), synthetic understanding. ② It is practical hermeneutics of Middle way, that is distant from the right and wrong. ③ It is tolerant of both views of dispute, because they are all truthfulness. ④ It is no-soul (an-ātman) hermeneutics that need impatial interpretative attitude. ⑤ It require faith in Buddha's teaching to understand the meaning of the text.
To progress Buddhist Hermeneutics, it is necessary for us to accept the profit of modern trends in Hermeneutics - magnified concept of text, cognition of hermeneutician's restriction, production of new understanding through the dialogue with text, possibility of philosophy of one's own.
