AbstractThe theory of Minjung Buddhism was not established systematically or officially. But, in the 1980's, some books and papers and phamplets that advocated Minjung Buddhism were publicated. I have used them as materials of this treatise. In this paper, I have studied on Minjung Buddhism generally.
First of all, the positive achievements of Minjung Buddhism are as follows.
1. Minjung Buddhist Movement has formed a fresh mood and stream in Buddhist Community. That is to say, it has inspired a new progressive historical consciousness and critical social consciousness in the Buddhist society which was conservative and closed.
2. Minjung Buddhism has given an impetus to the society of Buddhist Studies through a new methodology of social science.
Secondly, the negative problems of Minjung Buddhism are as follows.
1. The word of Minjung which Minjung Buddhism regard as of great importance has a conception of class. But in principle Buddhism is not a religion of liberation of one social class(Minjung), but a religion aiming at nirvana of all the people and sentient beings.
2. Minjung Buddhism seems to define the Enlightenment as a correct and scientific insight or consciousness of the concrete society and history. But in my opinion, Buddhistic Enlightenment must include a religious ultimate wisdom about the world and life also.
3. Minjung Buddhism has a biased view of pure land that it is a classless society, but I think that classless society itself is not a pure land but is only one part of it.
4. Minjung Buddhism seems to have a tendency to justify the revolution by force. But fundamentally Buddhism is a religion of non-violence and I think that Buddhism is to prefer a gradual reform to a radical revolution.
In a word it seems that Minjung Buddhism is short of the subjectivity or identity of Buddhism.
