AbstractThe four immaterial samādhi is one of the fundamental contemplation of Buddhist system, the four dhyāna included. The reason why it is called the immaterial samādhi that the practician has no chance to contemplate the rūpa as an object. The rūpa consists of 11 elements;the five indriya without indriya of mind, the five fields of the senses without object field of thought and latent rūpa. Thus, he has much deeper samādhi than the four dhyāna thanks to little formative function.
This thesis covers the importance of practicing through the method of the four immaterial samādhi, basing on the āgama, several sastra and the theory of Tian-tai(天台) Zhi-yi(智顗;A.D. 538~597) of China.
The four immaterial samādhi has the drawback of practician too deeper samādhi to practice vipaśyanā. But Buddha recommended his followers to practice the four immaterial samādhi with the positive point of having stable minds and enlarging practical power of samādhi.
