AbstractChines Buddhism was put down roots by the degree that a school was formed according to a difference of a position understood and translated the buddhist scriptures since buddhism was handed down from India to Chinese AeJe times.
But it was only the situation that kept a characteristic of Indian Buddhism as exclusive possession of intellectuals, and was not able to be absorbed fully by a Chinese society.
By the way, Buddhism is taken charge of important role in order to keep a state power according to the needs of the times. With this as a momentum, Buddhism make desperate efforts for the sake of harmony in Chinese society.
In this process, Chinese Buddhism was experienced trouble called ‘Destruction of Buddhism’. So, Chinese Buddhism should changed adaptively in Chinese specific character for survival.
As a result of efforts, there were built many buddhist templs and stupas in China. In the end, the Chinese buddhists constructed stone cave of Ungang(雲崗) and Yongmun(龍門) which are regarded as one in the best Buddhism arts in these times. And before the Period of North and South Dynasties(南北朝時代) focused into understanding of Indian Buddhism doctrine by translation of the Buddhist texts. On the other hand, the period of North and South dynasties paved way for base of Chinese buddhism.
Specially, ‘Destuction Buddhism(廢佛)’ of the North Dynasty has equipped with aspect as practice Buddhism by disillusion of Chinese Buddhist.
Therefore, Jiron schools studied practice method of gradual enlightment(漸悟) as like bodhisattva’s dasa-bhūmi(十地) practice. And Hwayen(華嚴), Vimalakīrti(維摩), Nirvana(涅槃) and Vijñana-marta schools have concerned more practical side than doctrine side.
Also, the North dynasty have paved way forming buddhism having Chinese character. For example, Sui’s dynasties(隋代) was 三階敎 and pure land school(淨土敎), and Tang’s dynasties(唐代) was Fa-bsiang-tsung(法相宗) and buddhist tantrism.(密敎)
In this way, because Chinese Buddhism maintained with state power closely and survived, developed. So ‘Destruction of Buddhism’ was possible.
This says that Chinese Buddhism have state buddhistic character and Chinese are having present benefit side. So it was possible to turn practical buddhism.
Chinese Buddhistic character have harmony or opposition with the Confucianism and Taoism. These thoughts had effected upon forming Chinese buddhism, deeply.
Thus, in the North dynasty, 'Destruction of Buddhism' had a role to turn from Indian Buddhism to Chinese Buddhism.
