| Abstract | 환성지안(喚醒志安, 1664~1729)은 조선조 후반 유교의 엄혹한 박해 속에서 사위어가던 불교의 목숨을 오늘에 이르기까지 이어주는 가교역할을 했다. 이 연구의 목적은 환성지안의 순교자로서의 의미의 재해석, 통도사와의 관계와 위상 확인, 한국불교 순교 인물 추모운동 필요 환기 등이다. 본 연구는 이러한 목적을 위해 「환성대사비명」, 「환성화상행장」, 『환성시집』, 『선문오종강요』, 통도사 영각(影閣)의 진영(眞影), 백련사의 주련과 편액, 부도전의 비석 등 통도사와 관련한 환성지안의 알려진 자료 분석과 함께, 환성유지(溜地), 환성송락(松落)『양산군지(陽山郡誌)』, 양산군 「토지대장」, 무풍한송로 환성석등 등 새로운 자료를 발굴하였다. 환성지안은 암울하던 조선조 후반기의 불교사에 우뚝한 인물이었다. 그는 임제선 대선사요, 화엄의 대종장이었으며, 대중을 휘어잡는 연설가였고, 빼어난 시인이었다. 그러나 무엇보다도 그는 엄혹한 박해의 시대에 법을 위해 몸을 바친 순교자였다. 한반도에서 불법을 지키기 위해 전쟁과 축성 등에 끌려나가 죽어간 수많은 순교자들은 차차 밝혀야겠지만, 환성지안 등 우뚝한 순교자들부터 기려 나아가는 추모사업이 간절하다.
Hwanseong Jian (喚醒志安, 1664~1729) served as a bridge to link Buddhist life, which was dying in the late Joseon Dynasty under the violent persecution of Confucianism, to today. The purpose of this study is to reinterpret his significance as a martyr, to check his status in Korean Buddhism and his relationship with the Tongdosa Temple, and to call attention to the activities for paying our respects to Korean Buddhist martyrs. This study finds several new materials with analysis of pre-existing data related to him and the Tongdosa Temple. He was a remarkable figure in the Buddhist history of the second half of the Joseon Dynasty. He was a great Seon master, a major chief of the Hwaeom, an excellent speaker appealing to the public, and a distinguished poet. But above all, he was a martyr who devoted himself to the Buddhist dharma in a time of terrible persecution. Many martyrs who were killed in Japanese invasions of Korea and for building fortifications in order to oppose them should be disclosed gradually, but first of all, it is desperate to cherish memorial activities for major martyrs.
