Abstract禪宗繪畫史上曾出現過繪畫藝術能否表現人的"本來面目"的大討論,這場討論實際上是禪宗不立文字的語言文字觀在繪畫領域中的反映。一派認為繪畫藝術的"言"不能真正表達"本來面目"這個內在的"意",另一派認為繪畫藝術仍不失為認識和把握"本來面目"的工具和途徑。從時間上來講,這場討論上自中晚唐,下至明清,可謂曠日持久。雖然討論的雙方最終也沒有得出完全一致的結論,但卻深化了人們對繪畫藝術的本質,特別是對繪畫本體論、繪畫創作論和繪畫鑒賞論的認識,因而有其積極意義。
