| Abstract | 본 논문은 文僧 蘇曼殊가 창작한 6편의 소설을 중심으로 작품에서 묘사하고 있는 불교적 사유와 역사의식에 대해 분석한 것이다. 근대중국의 작가 중에서 蘇曼殊를 서술의 중심에 둔 것은 문학적인 성취에 비해 소만수에 대한 국내학계의 연구가 거의 전무하기 때문이다. 게다가 중화권의 소만수연구도 주로 순수문학적인 측면에서 소만수 소설작품의 특징만 언급하고 있을 뿐, 소만수의 소설과 불학과의 관계에 대한 심층적인 연구도 상당히 부족한 상황도 반영한 결과다.
근대시기 불학과 중국문학의 관계라는 측면에서 보면 소만수의 시가와 소설은 불교적인 사유를 적극 반영하면서도 시대적인 아픔을 적극 고민하는 새로운 창작유형을 창조해내고 있기 때문에 문학사적인 측면에서 평가한다면 “전통의 계승과 후대에 대한 계몽(承先啓後)”이라는 전환기적인 특징을 가지고 있다. 그러므로 소만수 소설의 특징에 대해 다음과 같이 특정할 수가 있다. 첫 번째로 암울하고 혼탁한 전근대적 사회를 작품의 출발점으로 삼으면서, 모든 작품에서 ‘사랑’(正)과 ‘이별’(反)을 부정하고, ‘사랑의 불멸성을 상징’하는 출가와 죽음으로 귀결(合)시키는 변증법적 지양으로 묘사하고 있다. 두 번째로 작품 속에 묘사한 부정적인 세계관과 비극적인 인식을 토대로 신구시대의 교체기에 발생하는 모순과 불합리한 면을 비판하면서 순수한 사랑의 가치와 자아를 수호하려고 노력했다. 세 번째로 불법의 만민평등주의사상에 근거하여 소만수의 작품 곳곳에서는 민중의 삶을 옹호하고 동정하는 흔적을 쉽게 찾을 수 있다. 지배층보다는 피지배층을 위하고, 강자보다는 약자의 편에 서있으며, 부유한 자보다는 빈한한 자를 위해서 노력하는, 민중의 입장을 대변하고자 노력하는 소만수의 혁명적인 기질이 소설 속 도처에 투영되고 있다. 소만수 작품에 나타나는 이러한 특징은 근대시기에 활동한 진보적인 중국소설가들의 창작사유 및 역사의식의 반영이라고 할 수 있다.
Buddhist thought and historical consciousness described in 6 novels of Su Manshu’s who is a Buddhist of letters are analyzed in this thesis. The reason why Su Manshu became the description center among modern Chinese authors is there is little study on Su Manshu in the domestic academic circles compared with literary achievement. Besides, the study on Su Manshu in China circle is also only mainly referred to Su Manshu’s pure literary novel feature, and fairly short of the in-depth research on the connection of Su Manshu’s novel and Buddhism.
Buddhist thought is reflected and at the same time a new writing pattern is created in Su Manshu’s poems and novels if looking from the side of the connection of the Buddhology and Chinese literature so that a turning point’s so-called ‘carry on the past heritage and open up the future’ characteristic is presented. Therefore, the characteristics of Su Manshu’s novels can be summarized as followings.
First of all, black and corrupt pre-modern society is made as the start point of the work, and Love (positive) and Farewell (negative) is denied in all of the works, as well as entering the Buddhist priesthood which symbolizes the indestructibility main characters’ love and the end of the death is described in a dialectical. Second, the contradiction and unreasonable aspect occurred in the old and new times’ conversion period are criticized and great effort is made to guard the value of pure love and ego on the basis of negative world view and tragic awareness described in the works. Third, according to the principle of equality among all the people in Buddhism, the efforts of supporting and commiserating people’s lives can be easily found everywhere in Su Manshu’s works. A revolutionary turn of mind of Su Manshu who is for the sake of the ruled, not for the ruler; taking the side of the weak, not of the strong; making effort for the poor, not for the rich; trying to represent people’s position is projected in the novels. The creative thought and historical consciousness of the Chinese novelists in modern times can be conjectured to some extent through such analyses on Su Manshu’s works.
