Abstract서한(기원전206~기원후8)말 동한(25~220)초 중국에 본격적으로 전래된 불교는 삼국시대(220~280) 발전의 발판을 마련, 서진(265~317)·동진(317~418)시기를 거치며 토착화에 성공한 것으로 평가된다. 서진·동진시기 중국불교계에는 반야사상에 대한 해석을 둘러싸고 소위 ‘6가7종’이 등장한다. 6가7종 사상의 문제점을 종합·비판하고 새로운 중국불교의 벽두를 열었다고 평가되는 글이 후진(後秦, 384~417)시대 활약한, 구마라집(344~413)의 제자 승조(僧肇, 384~414)가 쓴 「물불천론」, 「부진공론」, 「반야무지론」, 「열반무명론」 등 4편의 논문이다. 이 글은 「부진공론」에 나타난 승조의 ‘6가7종(六家七宗)’에 대한 비판을 검토, 승조가 비판한 ‘본무자(本無者)’가 누구였는지를 분석했다. 특히 초기중국불교의 정초자 가운데 한 사람으로 평가되는 도안(道安, 312~385)이 ‘본무자’에 포함되는지도 논의했다. 현학화(玄學化)되고 격의화(格義化)된 동(同)시대불교에 대한 승조의 비판은 후일 수당불학(隋唐佛學)의 황금기를 여는 데 큰 역할을 한다. 승조의 4편 논문이 중요한 의미를 가지는 것도 이 때문이다. 한편 도안은 고구려에 불교를 전해준 전진(前秦, 334~394) 부견왕의 왕사(王師) 역할을 했다는 점에서 그의 사상을 이해하면 고구려불교에 대한 이해도 일정 정도 가능할 것이다.

When Kumarajiva(鸠摩罗什。344~413) came to Changan(长安) in 401, Buddhism was already flourishing at there. Daoan(道安。312~385), Zhufahu(竺法护。Dharmaraksa。231~308), Bofazu(帛法祖。3~4c) had prepared the ground. At those times, there are ‘Six schools and Seven sects(六家七宗)’ in Chinese Buddhism which try to explain what prajñā(般若) came from india is. Sengzhao(僧肇。384~414) who is disciple of Kumarajiva criticizes their points of view on prajñā in 「On Emptiness of the Unreal(不眞空論)」, for Sengzhao thinks that their theory of prajñā is not correct. Through this criticism, Sengzhao tries to correct the fallacies of Xuanxue-oriented Buddhism(玄学化佛教) and Geyi Buddhism(格义佛教) and induces Chinese Buddhism to open the gate of golden age of Suitang buddhist studies(隋唐佛学。581~907) in the future, therefore making a study of Sengzhao’s criticism on ‘Six schools and Seven sects’ is very important. This thesis is a special study of the Sengzhao’s criticism to ‘the School of Original Emptiness(本无者)’. what is more important is that whether Sengzhao’s criticism includes Daoan’s prajñā thought or not, for Daoan is king’s teacher of the nation of Qianqin(前秦。334~394)which introduced Buddhism to Gogurea(高句丽。B.C.37~A.D.668) in 372.
