AbstractNanjio Bunyiu has studied Western Buddhist philology from 1878 through 1884 in England. This is the first time among the Japanese buddhist scholars in Meiji(明治) Period. His study and activity in Europe helped to propagate Western Buddhist philology to Japan, and contribute to formation of the modern Buddhist study in the Japanese academic world.
Nanjio Bunyiu had teached sanskrit by Professor Max Müller who was the representative Orientalist and had retired from Oxford Univ. The Sacred Books of the East include the english translation of the sanskrit texts belong to Mahayana buddhism. Nanjio's research rendered great service to the correction and translation of these texts by Müller.
By the way, surprisingly the sanskrit manuskript of these texts had been transmitted to Max Müller from Japanese ancient temples by aid of Nanjio. The masterpiece of Nanjio Bunyiu is the Nanjio’s catalogue, that is the english index and catalogue of the Chinese translation of the Buddhist Tripitaka.

And it is examined that the ardent wish for obtainment of Buddhist Manuskript not only in the speach of Jodo Shin Shu(淨土眞宗) but also in the attitude of Max Müller. Namely, the buddhist manuskript had get to be regarded as material base for the modernization of Buddhist study.
