The Dragon King is an important protective God in Buddhism that held particular significance for the arid region of Dunhuang because of its ability to generate rain. Belief in the Dragon King was very popular in Dunhuang during the Tang and Song dynasties, during which time various images representing the Dragon King appeared in ancient Dunhuang artworks. From the Five Dynasties to the early Northern Song dynasty, the theme of “Dragon King worshipping the Buddha” was a popular theme in the murals and art of Dunhuang caves.
