| Abstract | 팔만대장경으로 일컬어지는 불교의 經書는 모두 중생의 근기에 맞추어서 만들어진 法門이다. 경전은 다 사람의 마음을 밝히기 위한 도구로써 그것은 마치 달을 가리킨 손가락이나 강을 건너기 위한 배와 같은 것이지만, 그 중에서도 禪宗의 宗旨가 담겨져 있어서 선수행의 지침서로서의 역할 뿐만 아니라 선으로서 중생교화의 방편을 제시하고 있는 경전을 禪經이라고 한다.
중국과 한국선종에서 애독되었던 여러 선경 중 능엄경은 중국 선종에서는 당대이후 송원명을 거쳐 근대에 이르기까지 다양한 시대와 여러 종파를 가리지 않고 널리 애독되었다. 이러한 경향은 남송원대를 거치는 사상사적 전환과정에서의 선종계의 간화선 성행은 그 내용이 수행에 대해 이론과 실천 부분에 있어 직설적으로 설명한 부분이 많으며, 또한 禪旨와 계합하는 바가 있는 능엄경의 사상적 위치를 급속히 향상시켜, 중국선종의 중요한 소의경전의 하나로 확립시켰던 것이다.
이러한 경향은 한국 선종에서도 여실히 나타나는데, 고려 중기 선종의 부활과 간화선의 수용이라는 새로운 변화과정에서 폭넓은 사상적 기반을 마련하는데 능엄경은 중요한 역할을 한 것을 볼 수 있다. 이러한 이유로 지금까지도 능엄경은 조계종의 강원 교과목의 사교과 중 맨 처음에 두고 선학인의 필독서로 규정되어 오고 있다.
The Buddhist scriptures refer to discourses which are designed to meet varying intellectual capabilities of human beings. They are methods to enlighten the human mind, like a ship to across a river or a finger pointing to the moon. Among them, the Seon scriptures contain the fundamental meanings and principles of Seon, thereby serving as a guidance of Seon practice and as a means of saving human beings.
Śuraṅgama- sutra(首楞嚴經), among several famous Seon scriptures in the Seon traditions of China and Korea, has been widely appreciated and enjoyed in the Chinese Seon tradition over various time periods and sects. Such trend
influences the prevalence of Kanhwa-Seon in the Seon tradition during the process of ideological transformation over various periods. This is because the contents involve clear and specific explanations of theories about practices. Also Śuraṅgama- sutra(首楞嚴經), whose contents coincides with the main principles of seon, could establish itself as one of the most important scriptures of Chinese Seon because of its ideological significance.
This trend appears in Korean Seon as well. In the new changing process of reviving Seon in the mid-Koryo dynasty and accepting Kanhwa-Seon, Śuraṅgama- sutra had served as a vital foundation for preparing wide ideological basis. For these reasons, Śuraṅgama- sutra has established itself as a must of Gogye Order of Korean Buddhism until now.
