This study focuses on biographic narratives of the first to sixth patriarchs of the Chan School in Lidai fabao ji which is the “lamp history” of the Baotang School (Jingzhong School) and compares them with the Northern School “lamp history,” Chuan fabao ji and Lengqie shizi ji, as well as the Southern School quotations, Nanyang heshang wenda zazhengyi. In doing so, it is discovered that the later Lidai fabao ji has similarities to these three texts, especially Nanyang heshang wenda zazhengyi. This suggests that in narrating the biographies of Chan School patriarchs recorded in Lidai fabao ji, Nanyang heshang wenda zazhengyi was considerably relied upon as a reference text or the two texts shared an even earlier common text. Further study of the miraculous legends recorded about Chan School patriarchs in Lidai fabao ji indeed shows evidence of even earlier sources, such as from Xu Gaoseng zhuan, “Liuzu neng chanshi beiming,” Fo benxing jijing (Abhiniskramana Sutra), and Fufazang jing. In addition, such miraculous narratives as Bodhidharma spitting out a snake after drinking poison, Huike cutting off his arm, and the flow of milk after slaughter all have auspicious significance in Buddhism. The flow of white milk, for example, symbolizes forbearance and ascetic practice, while the snake is a symbol of anger and jealousy.
