| Abstract | 이 논문은 현대한국불교를 대표하는 승려 중 한 사람인 퇴옹성철(退翁性徹, 1912~1993)에의해 추진된 선림고경총서의 간행 배경과 내용, 그리고 의의를 살펴보는 데 목적이 있다. 선림고경총서는 크게 1집과 2집으로 나뉘는데, 1집은 1988년부터 1993년까지 총37권의 선문헌을 한글로 번역해서 완간하였고, 2집은 1993년부터 두 종류의 선문헌을 번역하면서 시작된 이후 2015년에 1권을 출판하는 성과를 거뒀다. 현대한국불교사에서 선문헌만을 집중적으로 번역·출판한 사례는 극히 드문데, 여기에는 선종의정체성에 대한 퇴옹의 문제의식이 깊이 자리 잡고 있다. 퇴옹은 그가 활동하던 시기에 이미 선종의 정법이 감추어지고, 고불고조(古佛古祖)의 바른 뜻이 매몰되었음에 깊은 위기감을 느끼고 이에 대처하기 위해 여러 측면에서 강한 비판정신을 발휘했다.
그 중 1966년에 시작된 선문헌 법문은 1967년의 백일법문, 1974년의 『임제록』 법문, 그리고 1981년의 『선문정로』의 출판을 통해 지속된다. 퇴옹의 선문헌 법문은 선종 수증론의 근본이 돈오돈수(頓悟頓修)에 있다는 점을 강조하는 데 중점을 두고 있고, 특히『임제록』 법문에서는 임제의 삼구(三句)에 대한 올바른 해석을 강조하였다. 그리고 이러한 선문헌 법문에 대한 성과를 보다 대중적으로 확산시킨 것이 바로 선림고경총서의 간행이다. 이 총서의 간행은 퇴옹 자신에게 있어서는 그가 견지했던 선문(禪門)의정법에 대한 보다 객관적인 근거를 마련한 계기였고, 대중적으로는 선문헌을 한국사회에 보다 널리 알리는 기회가 되었다.
The main purpose of this paper is to describe the publication background and history, meaning of Sŏllimgogyŏngch'ongsŏ(禪林古鏡叢書) (the collected works of the old mirror of the meditating forest) which was made by T’oeong Sŏngch’ŏl(退翁性徹 , 1912~1993), one of the representative buddhist monks of modern Korean Buddhism. The Sŏllimgogyŏngch’ongsŏ is largely divided into two parts: in the first collection, total 37 books of the Sŏn literature were translated into Korean and fully published, and the second collection was published in 2015 since 1993 when two different kinds of the Sŏn literature started to be translated.
In the modern Korean buddhist history, it is rare to find the cases of translation and publication only on the Sŏn literature, and in here it reflects deeply inside the critical mind of T’oeong on the identification of the Sŏn school(禪宗). In the period when he was, the true dharma of the Sŏn school already disappeared, so he felt right thought of old Buddhas and patriarches in danger and tried to cope with it in various aspects. For example, the dharma talk based on the Sŏn literature which started from 1967 led to One hundred days dharma talk in 1967, the Linjì lù dharma talk, and the publication of Sŏnmunjŏngno in 1981.
T’oeong’s dharma talk based on the Sŏn literature focused on Sudden enlightenment and sudden cultivation(頓悟頓修) as the basis of Xiūzhèng Lùn(修證論) of the Sŏn school, and especially emphasized on right interpretation of three cases of Linjì in the Linjì lù dharma talk. And it was more widely popularized by publishing Sŏllimgogyŏngch’ongsŏ.The publication of this collection made T'oeong have the objective sources on the true dharma of the Sŏn school which he stood for and became an opportunity to let Korean society know the Sŏn literatures.
