Abstract본 논문은 비구 법정(法頂, 1932∼2010)의 삶과 수행의 면모에 나타난 선사상을 주제로 한 다. 법정은 1955년 22세에 효봉을 은사로 출가했다. 비구계를 받은 뒤 제방 선방에서 안거를 성만했고, 경전 번역에 힘썼으며, 1970년대 민주화 운동에도 참여했다. 법정은 30대 후반에 『무소유』라는 책을 통해 불교계보다 세상에 알려졌다. 진정한 수도자의 모 습으로 수많은 이들의 영혼을 일깨워준 ‘비구’로서 70년대 이후부터 법정이 열반하기 전까지 한국사회의 멘토였다. 한편 법정은 글과 법문으로 부처님의 진리를 세상에 보편 화시킨 현대판 ‘21세기 원효’라고 볼 수 있다.
진리는 중생의 삶 속에 있다. 법정의 삶과 수행이 곧 선(禪)의 길이다. 법정의 글과 법문 을 통해 선사상적 측면에서 살펴 볼 수 있는 점은 세 분야이다. 첫째는 선종사에서 법정 이 모델로 삼았던 선사들로서 담백하고 가난한 수도자들, 시를 읊으며 은둔자적한 선사 들, 무정물을 통해 깨달음을 추구한 선사들이다. 둘째는 법정은 초년 시절에 ‘본래면목 (本來面目)’ 화두를 들었고, 이후로는 ‘시심마(是什麼:나는 누구인가)’로서 평생을 이 화두를 안 고 살았다. 이렇게 선적(禪的) 삶을 지향은 법정은 현재 시점을 일상에서 강조했으며, 그 의 일상적 삶이 그대로 선의 전개였다. 셋째는 법정은 무소유적 삶을 일관하며, 무정물 에 공감하며 그의 ‘속 뜰’ 세계를 채웠다.

This thesis shall have the Zen thought appearing in the aspects of the life and the practice of the Buddhist priest Beopjeong (1932~2010) as the subject. Beopjeong left the home with the Buddhist monk Hyobong as the teacher at the age of 22 in the year 1955. After receiving the bigugye, at the good defense embankment, the angeo was seongman. And he had exerted the strength on the translation of the scriptures. And, in the 1970’s, he had participated in the democratization movement, too. In the latter part of his 30’s, through a book called ‘Nonpossession’, Boepjeong had publicized to the world rather than the Buddhist system. As ‘a Buddhist priest’ who awakened the spirits of a lot of people with the appearance of a true monk, from after the 1970’s until the monk entered the Nirvana, he had been a mentor of the Korean society. Meanwhile, it can be considered that Beopjeong is the modern version ‘21st century Wonhyo’ who had universalized the truths of the Buddha in the world through the writings and the Buddhist writings. Truth lies within the lives of the people. The life and the practice of Beopjeong are, indeed, the road of Zen. Through the writings and the Buddhist writings of Beopjeong, from the aspect of the Zen thought, three fields had been approached. Regarding the first, the origin of the Buddhist monks who had been made into the models by Beopjeong at the Seonjongsa Temple had been climbed up. They are the light and poor ascetics, the Buddhist monks who had been reclusive while reciting the poems, and the Buddhist monks who had pursued the realization through the inanimates. The second is the Zen thought of Beopjeong. During the young days, Beopjeong had heard about the topic of conversation of ‘the original appearance’. And, afterwards, the topic of conversation had been the Sisimma. Meanwhile, Beopjeong had emphasized the present time point that had been considered to be important in Zen in the everyday life. And, his everyday life is the unfolding of Zen just the way it is. Regarding the third, from the non-possession thought of Beopjeong, in relation to the sympathetic awareness of the inanimates, etc., the world of his Inner Courtyard had been looked at.
