| Abstract | 본 고찰은 지금껏 한국 현대불교사에서 주목하지 않았던 인물인 도광선사를 학문적으로 정리한 글이다. 이런 연고로 여기에서는 그의 생애, 구도, 보살행이라는 관점에서 그의 삶 전체상을 소묘하여 보았다.
그는 대각사에서 출가후 범어사 강원에서 이력공부를 마친 후, 금강산 일대에서 수행하였다. 이 과정에서 그는 주력수행을 통해 불교의 진수를 맛보았다. 이후에는 다보사, 해인사, 백양사, 범어사 선원에서 참선 수행을 하였다. 한편 그는 범어사 선원에서 수행을 하면서 대중, 수좌들의 외호를 독실하게 하여 보살이라는 칭호를 받게 되었다.
1950년대 초반, 그는 전라도 담양의 황매산 기슭에 토굴에 보광선원을 개창하여 전라도 지역 선포교에 나섰다. 그러나 보광선원에서의 포교는 척박한 경제 형편으로 고난의 세월이었다. 그는 그즈음 전개된 불교정화운동에도 참여하였다. 정화운동이 종료된 후에는 강진 백련사 주지 소임을 보기도 하였다. 이런 과정을 거치며 그는 사찰 불사에 있어서 근검절약, 원융살림, 불교정화, 철저한 상좌교육
을 꾸준히 이어갔다. 이는 곧 보살행이었다. 그의 보살행은 종단에서도 널리 소문이 나서 그가 용주사, 범어사, 해인사 주지 소임을 맡게 한 원동력이 되었다. 그는 1969년 화엄사 주지에 취임하였는데, 이때부터 그의 문도들이 현재까지 화엄사에 주석할 수 있는 계기가 되었다.
종단이 안정된 이후에는 그의 도반들과 청맥회라는 친목 단체를 만들어 종단을 걱정하고, 수행을 탁마하는 활동을 하였다. 그의 이 같은 고민은 그가 영축회, 선림회 등 수좌들이 종단의 재정화를 시도한 단체에 가담하는 것으로도 나타났다. 그의 종단 정화 및 외호, 보살행은 그가 1984년 불의로 사고로 입적할 때까지 지속되었다.
이렇게 그의 생애는 구도와 보살행으로 점철되었다. 도광연구는 화엄사 및 화엄문도회, 범어사 선원, 청맥회, 보살 등의 연구에 새로운 지평을 제공하는 것이라 하겠다.
This treatise is an article on Seon Master Dogwang who, as an eminent buddhist figure, was not paid attention to the public of the buddhist circle in modern korean buddhist history scientifically. Therefore here I sketched his whole life in the point of view for Bodhisattva's Action and Seeking after Truth.
He entered Daegak temple and joint Sangha. Dogwang completed his buddhist studies at Bumeo Sangha College after that he practiced in the whole area of Mt. Gumgang. In this process he experienced the essence of buddhism through mantra(one-pointed concentration) practice. Henceforth he practiced Seon meditation at Seon houses in Dabo temple, Haein temple, Baekyang temple, and Bumeo temple. He was called as a bodhisattva in doing protect and support sincerely for temple members and Seon practice monks during the Seon practice in Bumeo temple.
In the early 1950 he opened Bogwang Seon temple at Damyang, Cheolla South Province and spread out Seon buddhism in this area, but he suffered management for Bogwan Seon temple because of financial situation. He took part in korean buddhist purification movement at that time. After completion of purification movement of Korean Buddhist Sangha corruption, he took abbot of Baekryeon temple at Gangjin. In this process he continued diligence and
frugality, harmonious management, buddhist purification and thorough education of apprentices. This was bodhisattva’s action itself. His bodhisattva’s action was well known to the Sangha widely and it became motivation to let him appointed abbots of Yongju temple, Bumeo temple and Haein temple. He took up abbot post of Hwaeom temple in 1969, since then his disciples have staying at this temple.
After the settlement of the Sangha, he organized Cheongmaek society for fellowship with monk friends and worked in worrying about the Sangha and cultivating mutual practice. His concern about these made him set up Youngchuk society, Seonlim society which joined in the re-purification movement for the Sangha. His efforts to Sangha purification movement and the outside-protection, bodhisattva’s action had continued until he had entered Parinirvana with a sudden accident in 1984.
Like this his life was studded with seeking after truth and bodhisattva’s action. To study Most Ven. Dogwang offers a new area for research Hwaeom temple, Hwaeom disciples’ society, Cheongmaek society and bodhisattva’s thought etc. |
