| Abstract | 본 논문의 목적은 현대 미국불교에서 나타나는 통합 논의, 혼합수행, 비종파적 경향을 고찰하고 아울러 그러한 경향이 한국불교에 어떤 점을 시사해주는지 살펴보는 것이다. 글의 내용을 살펴보면, 우선 미국 불교도의 현황을 살펴보면서 미국불교의 구성과 그 특징을 고찰해보고, 이어서 불교전통들 간의 통합 및 불교-타종교의 교류 현황을 탐구해보았다. 서양의 불교는 하나의 전통만을 고수하지 않는 비종파적 성향을 보이고 있으며, 세계의 모든 불교전통이 한 자리에 다 모인 상황에서 이와 같은 열린 태도는 다민족의 이민들로 구성된 미국사회의 절충적이고 실용적인 성향과 상응한다. 다음으로 미국불교가 아시아 전통불교와 다르게 여러 전통의 수행법을 혼합하는 현황을 분석했다. 서로의 수행전통을 개방하여 실험하고 수용하기도 하는 현상은 아시아불교에서 유래를 찾을 수 없는 혁신이다. 이어서 비종파적 수행단체에서는 특정 종파에 소속되지 않고 독립적으로 수행해가는 사례들을 소개했으며, 마지막으로 미국불교의 경향들을 한국불교와 연관시켜 본 후 필자의 의견을 두 가지로 제시했다. 첫째는 타 종파 및 종교와의 교류·화합은 한국불교에게도 절실히 필요하다는 것, 그리고 둘째는 수행의 측면에서 볼 때 한국불교는 일상적인 삶과 더욱 밀접해질 필요가 있다는 것이다.
The purpose of this article is to analyze three trends in contemporary Buddhism in America, namely integration among traditions, mixed practice, and non-sectarianism and then to examine what these trends suggest to the present Korean Buddhism. As a start this article addresses the present state of Buddhism in America, its structure and unique features in particular. This is followed by the analyses of integration between Buddhist and other traditions and of active exchange between Buddhism and other religions. Western Buddhism in general tends to demonstrate open-mindedness to other religions but not stick to their own probably because the land of America is an assembly place of almost all the world’s Buddhist traditions. Furthermore, such a tendency accords with the eclectic and pragmatic inclination of the American society that is composed of multi-racial immigrants. Next, I discuss a rare and unprecedented innovation undertaken in Buddhism in America; that is, the mixture of practice methods and their exchange among various traditions. After that, I introduce the topic of non-sectarianism, which is conducted by some Western practice communities or by some prominent figures with a non-sectarian, independent attitude. Lastly, concerning the abovementioned three topics I come up with my views of what these topics suggest to contemporary Korean Buddhism in two ways: one is that Korean Buddhism needs to exert itself to further exchange among other Buddhist sects and religious traditions; the other is that it should reform its practice system to fit in well with the practitioners’ everyday life. |
