AbstractThis study focuses on the genesis and characteristics of the names of the Buddha, Āmítuó 阿彌陀 and Wúliàng qingjìng 無量清淨, in the two oldest versions oft he Larger Sukhāvativyūha-sūtra, the Dà āmítuó jing 大阿彌陀經 (T.362)and the Wúliàng qingjìng píngdengjúe jing 無量清淨平等覺經 (T.361). The study includes three parts. First of all, a discussion on the problem of the original form of the Buddhaʼs name, Āmítuó 阿彌陀, in the Dà āmítuó jing; especially on the meaning of this Buddhaʼs name and its characteristics showing in this sūtra. Secondly, focusing on the reasons why the name of the Buddha was changed to Wúliàng qingjìng 無量清淨 in the Wúliàng qingjìng píngdengjúe jing and giving concrete evidence that qingjìng 清淨 is similar in meaning to ānlè安樂 in Chinese traditional culture. Finally, a discussion on the influence of the Buddhaʼs name, Wúliàng qingjìng, to the early Chinese Pure Land Buddhism.
