Abstract | There are two questions discussed in this article. Firstly, the ritual of Yoga Buddha (瑜伽仏[事]) preserved in the Library Cave at Dunhuang is very different from the sūtra of confession to thirty-seven Buddhas and Bodhisattvas (三十七尊礼懺文) translated by Amoghavajra (不空). The Yoga Buddha ritual is a mixture whose core is the sūtra of confession to thirty-seven Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Secondly, I will analyze the title of this document, and show that the three Chinese characters “瑜伽仏” at the beginning are an abbreviation of the thirty-seven Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and forms the gsol-vdebull crap which is first portion of the whole ritual. |
