| Abstract | 금산사(金山寺)는 옛 백제 권역을 대표하는 자은종(慈恩宗[法相宗])의 중심 사찰이다. 금산사가 한국 불교사에서 높은 위상을 확보하는 것은 진표율사(眞表律師)의 활약 때문이다. 그런데 진표와 관련된 기록에는 스승인 순제(順濟)에 대한 단편적인 내용이 있어 주목된다. 왜냐하면 순제가 당나라에 유학한 유학승이자, 진표의 계율(戒律) 추구와 신앙 구조에 막대한 영향을 미치는 모습이 확인되기 때문이다.
본 고는 지금까지 연구되기 힘들었던 순제에 대해서 먼저 정리했다. 이를 통해, 먼저 순제의 스승은 중국 정토종의 선도(善導)가 아니라 선무외(善無畏)가 타당성이 높다는 점을 밝혔다. 또 순제가 유학했을 당시 중국불교의 신앙적인 측면에 지장과 미륵의 이중구조가 존재함을 분명히 했다. 이외에도 순제가 신라의 대표적인 율사인 자장(慈藏)의 영향을 받은 율사라는 점도 분명히 하였다.
순제에 대한 명확성 확보는 순제에게서 확인되는 계율적인 특징과 지장과 미륵의 이중신앙 구조가 진표에게서도 그대로 목도된다는 점에서 주목된다. 즉 순제를 통해서 초기 금산사의 계율과 신앙이라는 특징을 더욱 분명히 정리해 볼 수 있게 되는 것이다.
그리고 마지막으로 현대의 고승인 태공 월주의 실천행과 이분이 진표의 이념을 계승하는 측면을 검토했다. 즉 월주는 금산사 전통의 계율과 지장 및 미륵 신앙의 현대적인 실천자였던 것이다.
Geumsansa (金山寺) was a central temple of Jaeunjong (慈恩宗) or Beopsangjong (法相宗) representing the Baekje region. The Geumsansa Temple secured a high status in Korean Buddhist history thanks to the active work of vinaya master Jinpyo. However, the record related to Jinpyo draws an attention because it contains fragmentary information about his teacher Sunje (順濟). It shows that Sunje was a Confucian monk who studied in the Tang Dynasty, and that he had a huge influence on Jinpyo's pursuit of śīla-vinaya (戒律) and the structure of his faith.
In this paper, it is first summarized about Sunje, who has been seldom studied until now. Through this, it is first revealed that Sunje's teacher is more likely to be Seonmueo (善無畏), rather than Seondo (善導), who belonged to Pure Land sect of China. And it also made it clear that there was a dual structure of Kṣitigarbha-bodhi-sattva and Maitreya-bodhi-sattva in the Chinese Buddhism when Sunje studied in China. In addition, it also made it clear that Sunje was influenced by Jajang (慈藏), a representative a vinaya master of Silla.
This identification about Sunje is noteworthy in that the vinaya characteristics and double belief structure of Kṣitigarbha-bodhi-sattva and Maitreya-bodhi-sattva confirmed in Sunje are also seen in Jinpyo. More specifically, the characteristics of śīla-vinaya and faith in the early Geumsansa Temple are clearly seen through Sunje.
And finally, this study reviews the practices of Taegong Wolju, a modern high monk, and his inheritance of Jinpyo's ideology. In other words, Wolju was a modern practitioner of the traditional śīla-vinaya, jijang, and Maitreya of the Geumsansa.
