| Abstract | 이 글은 일본 정토불교 조사들의 삶과 실천을 고려하면서 원효의 삶 속에서 볼 수 있는 정토신앙을 재해석해 보려는 시도이다. 이러한 방법론이 필요한 이유는 무엇보다 원효의 전기 자료가 대단히 부족하기 때문이다. 그 부족한 전기 자료를 이렇게도 해석해 보고 저렇게도 해석해 보려고 하는 것이다.
구체적으로 일연(一然, 1206-1280)의 『삼국유사(三國遺事)』 원효불기(元曉不羈)조의 서술 중에서 원효의 정토신앙에서 볼 수 있는 세 가지 사실을 조명해 보려고 한다. 첫째는 실계(失戒)의 문제이고, 둘째는 무애(無㝵)의 의미이며, 마지막 셋째는 염불춤의 공연(共演)이다.
첫째 실계의 문제와 관련해서는 정토진종의 개조 신란의 처대(妻帶)를 함께 생각해 볼 수 있다. 양자는 공히 계를 깨뜨리고 아들을 낳았다. 그렇지만 신란의 경우는 ‘결혼’이라고 할 수 있지만, 원효의 경우에는 ‘결혼’이라 부르기에는 무리가 있다는 점을 논증하였다. 무엇보다 큰 차이는 신란의 삶과 신앙은 그의 사후 마침내 ‘정토진종’이라는 하나의 거대한 종파를 낳았지만, 원효는 그렇지 못했다는 점이다.
둘째 무애의 문제와 관련해서도 신란의 경우를 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 신란은 『탄이초』와 주저 『교행신증』 제2권에서 원효가 인용했던 『화엄경』의 구절 “일체에 무애한 사람이 한 길로 생사를 벗어난다”을 인용하고 있기 때문이다. 신란에게 이 『화엄경』의 구절이 정토신앙의 맥락에서 인용되었음을 생각할 때, 원효의 『화엄경』 인용 역시 정토신앙적 맥락에서 이루어진 것임을 이해할 수 있게 된다.
셋째 춤염불의 경우에는 헤이안(平安) 시대의 염불자 쿠야와 가마쿠라(鎌倉) 시대 시종(時宗)의 개조 잇펜을 생각해 볼 수 있다. 이들은 모두 “나무아미타불” 염불을 전하면서, 민중들과 함께 춤추었다. 바로 그 점으로 인해서 쿠야는 ‘저자거리의 성인’으로 추앙되었으며, 잇펜 역시 ‘모든 것을 버린 성자’로 추앙되었다. 이를 통해서, 원효의 경우에도 현존하는 기록에는 전하지 않으나 당시 민중들로부터 성자로서 추앙되고 호응을 얻었을 것으로 상상해 볼 수 있게 된다.
I tried to re-interpret Wonhyo's practice depending on Pure Land Buddhism in relation to the patriarchies of the Japanese Pure Land Buddhism. The reason in which I took this method was due to the shortage of documents on Wonhyo's life and faith.
I tried to concretely illuminate three points regarding the description in the chapter ‘Wonhyo is not restrained’ (元曉不羈) of Samguk-yusa. The problem of precepts-loss, the meaning of freedom from all obstacles, and the co-acting of dancing-reciting has been illuminated.
First, I considered the case of Shinran, the founder of Shin Buddhism in Japan, who destroyed the precept not to take a marriage in relation to the problem of precepts-loss. The similarity between Wonhyo and Shinran has previously been pointed out by many scholars. However, I proved that there are differences between Wonhyo and Shinran in which Wonhyo's case is not able to call ‘marriage.’ Furthermore, Wonhyo did not aim to find the sect.
Secondly, I took notice of Shinran's recitation of the word ‘freedom from all obstacles’ in the Avataṁsaka Sūtra in Tannisho (歎異抄) and A Collection of Passages Revealing The True Practice of the Pure Land Way (敎行信證). Wonhyo and Shinran cited the same passages together. Via the example of Shinran, I understood the possibility of interpreting the Avataṁsaka word.
Lastly, in Japan, Kuya of the Heian period and Ippen of the Kamakura period danced reciting Amitabha's name. Because of their ‘dancing-recitation’, they were worshipped as ‘saint(bodhisattva) in the city’ by the people. Even though there are not any document about people's evaluation on Wonhyo's ‘dance-recitation’, I think that Wonhyo could be praised as ‘saint(bodhisattva) in the city’ like Kuya or Ippen in Japanese Buddhism. |
