| Abstract | 이 글에서는 동아시아 화엄교학에서 중요한 교의 중 하나인 육상설(六相說)을 일본 화엄교학의 대표 학승인 교넨(凝然)이 어떻게 이해하고 변용했는지를 고찰하였다. 이를 위해서 육상설의 다양한 논의 주제 가운데 내적 구조 및 목적과 적용 대상을 중심으로 먼저 교넨 이전의 흐름을 알아본 후에 이를 바탕으로 육상설의 흐름들 가운데 교넨이 어떤 흐름에 속하였으며 어떠한 역할을 하였는지 살펴보았다.
첫째, 내적 구조에서 교넨은 기본적으로 의상(義相)과 법장(法藏)에 의해서 그 이전과 다르게 개변된 총상(總相)과 별상(別相)의 구조를 계승한다. 이와 동시에 교넨에게는 동상(同相)과 이상(異相)이 별상에 대한 것이 아니라 총별 전체 모든 항목에 대한 것인 구조도 함께 보이며 이는 원효(元曉)의 육상설로부터 영향을 받은 것으로 추정된다. 즉 내적 구조의 측면에서 교넨은 의상과 원효의 영향을 함께 받고 있는 것이다.
둘째, 육상설의 목적과 적용 대상에서 교넨은 의상과 법장을 잇고 있다. 즉 교넨에게 육상설의 목적은 경전 해석의 방법 등이 아니라 일승연기의 무진원융의를 밝히려는 것이며 이에 따라서 육상설의 적용 대상은 당연히 일체 연기법이 된다. 육상설의 이러한 목적과 적용 대상에 대한 입장은 의상이 시작하고 법장이 계승한 것으로서 이러한 흐름이 교넨에게도 이어지고 있는 것이다.
그러나 법장 이후에 의상-법장을 따르면서도 법장의 육상설 논의, 예를 들어 집[舍]에 대한 논의를 둘러싸고 오해와 혼란이 일어난다. 법장을 이었다고 전해지는 징관(澄觀)은 법장이 육상설을 설명하기 위해서 집을 비유로서 사용한 것으로 이해하지만 이에 대해서 법장의 집이 비유인지 실제 예인지를 두고 후대에 논란이 생긴다. 교넨은 이에 대해서 정확한 문제의식을 가지고 법장의 본의에 맞게 집이 비유[喩]가 아니라 실례[法]임을 명확하게 밝힘으로써 일승연기의 무진원융을 밝히려는 목적 하에 일체 연기법에 적용되는 화엄종의 육상설을 굳건히 재정립하고자 하였다.
This article aims to understand the Theory of the Six Characteristics (the theory, hereafter) of Gyonen who is the representative scholar of Japanese Huayan thought, noting these characteristics of the theory. As an attempt, I examined his theory focusing on the internal structure, purpose, and object for application among various themes of the theory. This article looks first at the theories before his, and then studies which of them he inherited, as well as what role he played in the history of the theory.
In terms of the internal structure, Gyonen inherits the structure of the characteristics of the whole (總相) and parts (別相), which is changed by Uisang (義相) and Fazang (法藏) differently than before. At the same time, it can be assumed that he is also affected by Wonhyo (元曉) in that the characteristics of unity (同相) and diversity (異相) in his theory is not about the characteristics of parts but about all the components, which is very similar to Wonhyo's.
As for the purpose and object of application, Gyonen follows Uisang and Fazang. The purpose of the theory is not a method to interpret sūtras, but a way to reveal the meaning of the perfect interfusion in the one-vehicle-dependent arising, and accordingly, the object of application are all the dependently arisen dharmas. This position originated from Uisang and was succeeded by Fazang, and this flow continues through him.
However, after Fazang, misunderstandings and confusion arise over Fazang's theory; for example, the discussion of the house (舍). He firmly re-established the theory by clarifying that the house was an example, not an analogy, in line with Uisang-Fazang's original intentions.
