The indigenous religions of India are characterised by an obvious preoccupation with immobility. In some currents this preoccupation is expressed in ascetic practices, in others through the acceptance of an inactive soul which has to be known and realised if one wishes to obtain liberation. Buddhism accepts neither these ascetic practices nor knowledge of the self as a means to attain the highest good. It was not however successful in casting such practices and ideas out once and for all Some thoughts about the presence of similar practices and ideas in different cultures conclude this article.
