| Abstract | 원효는 실계(失戒) 이후 천촌만락을 다니면서 대중들을 교화하였을 당시에 시를 활용했다고 한다. 과연 어떤 시들이 활용되었을까? 현재 전하는 원효의 시 두 편, 즉 『미타증성게』와 『징성가』가 그러한 대중교화의 현장에서 활용될 수 있었을까? 종래에 이 시들을 연구한 김상현과 한태식(보광)은 공히 이 두 편의 시들이 원효의 대중교화에 활용되었을 것으로 보았다.
그러나 나는 그렇게 생각하지 않는다. 무엇보다 결정적인 이유는 수기설법(隨機說法)이라는 불타의 설법정신에 비추어 볼 때, 원효가 천촌만락에서 만난 대중들에게는 『미타증성게』와 『징성가』의 내용들이 어렵다고 판단되기 때문이다. 난행(難行)이라 할 수 있는 부분이 혼재되어 있는 것이다. 아무래도 ‘나무꾼, 독짓는 사람, 사냥꾼’들과 같은 대중들, 즉 지적으로도 그다지 높은 수준의 근기라고 보기 어려운 사람들에게는 자력과 타력의 혼합이나 관상염불과 칭명염불의 혼합이 아니라 그저 칭명염불의 전수(專修)만이 요청되었을 것이기 때문이다. 그것만이 믿음에 입각한 이행도(易行道)일 것이기 때문이다.
한편 김상현은 『징성가』를 광덕의 『원왕생가』와 같은 문맥이라고 보았다. 이에 대해서 검토한 결과 같은 점도 있지만, 다른 점도 있었다. 정토신앙의 기본 구조는 같지만, 『원왕생가』가 철저히 칭명염불의 전수만을 말하고 있다면 『징성가』는 『관무량수경』에서 볼 수 있는 것처럼 관상염불에서 칭명염불로의 전환을 보여주지만, 그 두 가지가 혼재되어 있는 것만으로도 대중들에게는 혼돈스러울 수 있었을 것이다.
이러한 이유로 하여, 나는 원효의 민중교화에 활용한 정토시의 범위를 현재 전하는 두 작품만으로 한정해서 생각하지 않는다. 현재 전하지 않는 작품이 더 있었을 것으로 상정한 뒤, 그들 작품이 민중교화를 위하여 활용되었을 가능성을 열어놓는 것이 더욱 적절하지 않을까라고 생각하는 것이다.
This article examines whether Wonhyo’s poems A Verse on Amita Buddha’s Pure Nature and A Verse on Pure Nature could have been used for enlightening people or not. Up to now, Kim, Sanghyun and Han, Taesik (Bo-Kwang) have recognized these two poems as texts in the field where Wonhyo introduced Amitabha’s Pure Land to the people of the Shilla society.
However, I cannot agree with them. This is because, first of all, the poems would have been too difficult for the lower class to understand Pure land Buddhism; this difficulty is not in line with the Buddhistic attitude of educating listeners about Buddhism by making the concepts as easy to understand as possible.
In particular, Kim Sanghyun considered A Verse on Pure Nature and Wonwangsaeng-ga as the same in context. Of course, they have both similarities and differences. They are similar poems that speak of Amitabha’s Pure Land, but even though the former takes the recitation of Amitabha’s name based on the Sutra of Visualization Amitabha as a method of going Pure Land, it contains difficult concept and thoughts for lower class. I think it is necessary to introduce only the recitation of Amitabha’s name to the lower class. However, Wonwangsaeng-ga says that it is necessary for us to recite Amitabha’s name to go to the Pure Land.
I think that we have to imagine that there could be lost poems by Wonhyo. Once we do that, we will be able to broaden our understanding of Wonhyo’s life, enlightening activities, and faith. |
