| Abstract | 본 고찰은 근대불교의 중심적인 승려로 유명한 한용운의 간화선(看話禪)에 대한 성격을 밝히려는 글이다. 지금껏 한용운의 문학, 독립운동, 불교사상 등에 대해서는 다양한 연구가 나왔다. 그러나 그의 선사상에 대한 연구는 미진하였다. 이에 본고에서는 그의 선사상을 간화선과 연관하여 살피고자 한다.
한용운의 선에 대한 내용은 다음과 같다. 제도권 선원에서 참선, 오도송이 있으며, 선 수행자의 본부인 선학원에 10여년 간 주석, 말년의 심우장(尋牛莊)에서 생활선 등이다. 또한 그는 선(禪)에 대한 다양한 기고문을 남겼다. 특히 그의 선에 대한 기고문은 선의 개요, 성격, 방법 등을 논리적으로 서술을 한 글이다. 즉, 근대기의 불교계에서 선을 설명하는 논설문으로서는 특별한, 독보적인 위상을 갖는다. 그의 그 글은 선에 대한 개요, 수행, 성격을 보편적인 언어로 서술한 객관적인 글이었다.
그래서 필자는 본 고찰에서 한용운의 선사상을 본격적으로 이해하기 위한 전 단계로 그의 선 관련 기고문을 집중 분석하였다. 그 분석은 첫째 한용운의 선에 대한 이해, 둘째 한용운의 간화선에 대한 이해, 셋째 간화선 수행을 종료한 수좌들의 행보와 그의 불교사상을 대변하는 것으로 이해되고 있는 대중불교론(大衆佛敎論)과의 상관성에 대한 성격을 정리하였다.
이 고찰이 한용운의 불교사상, 선사상, 근대기 선에 대한 사조(思潮), 간화선의 역사적 이해 등을 살핌에 있어 도움이 되길 기대한다.
This paper aims to examine out the characteristics of ‘Ganhwason’ of Han, Yong-un who is a well-known monk of modern Buddhism. So far, there has been diverse research on Han, Yong-un’s literature, independence movement and Buddhist thoughts. However, few works cover on his Zen thoughts. Therefore, I study a his Zen thoughts in this paper.
Followings are about Han, Yong-un’s zen. He practised zen meditation and ‘Odosong’ in an institutional Zen Buddhist temple, commented on Buddhism for 10 years in ‘Seonhakwon’, and practised lifestyle Zen in Simujang, in his later years. In addition, he has diversely contributed to Zen. His contributions to Zen include logical writings expressing the concept, characteristics and method of Zen. In other words, his contributions were special and exclusive as logical writings explaining Zen in the Buddhist world of modern times. His contributions were objective writings that describing the concept, practice and characteristics of Zen through a universal language.
Thus in this paper, I have concentrated on analyzing Han, Yong-un’s contributions as a previous measure to understand his Zen thoughts. The analysis includes, first, understanding of Han, Yong-un’s Zen, second, an understanding of Han, Yong-un’s Ganhwaseon, and third, the characteristics of the interrelationship of popular Buddhism which is known to represent the performances of the monks who practised Ganhwaseon, and his Buddhist thoughts.
