| Abstract | 인간 문화의 전 분야에 걸쳐서 아날로그로부터 디지털로 대이주가 진행되고 있는 현시대, 디지털과 인문학의 융합이 들불처럼 번져 나가는 디지털 인문학의 흐름을 맞이하여 인간에 대한 탐구를 본질로 하는 불교학이 현재 어느 길에 서 있으며 앞으로는 어느 길로 나가야 할 것인가? 이 글은 디지털 인문학의 기본 정의와 주요한 특성들, 대표적인 사례들을 소개하고 나아가 불교학의 대응 현황을 분야별 사례를 통해 점검한 후에 이를 바탕으로 한국 불교학이 이 흐름에 왜, 그리고 어떻게 대처해야 하는지 고민해보았다.
현재 디지털 인문학은 연구와 교육 그리고 그 외 분야에서 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 연구 분야는 디지털에 의한 인문학 측면과 디지털 시대를 인문학적 입장에서 조망하는 측면으로 나누어 생각해 볼 수 있으며, 이는 또 다시 여러 세부 분야로 나누어진다. 불교학도 디지털 인문학의 각 분야에서 훌륭한 성과를 거두고 있다. 그러나 현재 한국 불교학의 디지털 시대, 디지털 인문학에 대한 대응은 전체적이고 장기적인 계획 아래에서 체계적으로 진행되고 있다기보다는 시류에 편승한 단편적인 임기응변의 성격이 짙어 보인다.
필자는 그 근본적인 이유가 현재 한국 불교학의 ‘현장성 결여’라고 보았다. ‘현장성 결여’란 다른 말로 현재 여기에서 살아가는 사람들의 삶에 대한 무관심이다. 이를 해결하기 위해서는 디지털 현상과 디지털 인문학의 근본 성격을 파악하는 것에서부터 시작해야 한다. 필자는 디지털 현상이 다름 아닌 불교학의 핵심 연구 대상인 인간 욕구의 새로운 표현 방식이고 디지털 인문학은 그것을 연구할 효과적인 수단이라고 생각한다.
나를 포함한 사람들의 삶을 파악하고 이를 불교의 관점에서 분석 · 이해하여[上求菩提] 사람들이 보다 행복한 삶을 이루어 나가도록 기여하는 것[下化衆生]이 불교학의 본령이라면 하루 종일 스마트폰에 빠져 있는, 바로 옆의 가족과 친구를 떠나 포켓몬 고의 포켓몬을 찾으러 다니는 이 시대의 사람들에게 불교학의 존재 이유는 바로 디지털 현상에 대해서 디지털 인문학적 도구를 통해서 불교적 해답을 제시하는데 있을 것이다.
What is the status of buddhist studies, a part of humanities, and where should it be headed in the age of digital humanities (DH) in which a merger between digital and humanities is fiercely growing, and when a great migration is ongoing from analogue to digital? This article has three purposes: 1) to introduce the definition, characteristics, and main examples of DH, 2) to examine the status of buddhist studies with regard to DH, and 3) to find out why and how buddhist studies in Korea have to cope with DH.
DH is fast developing in today's world in the field of research, education, and many others. Research in DH can be categorized into two kinds: research on humanities using digital technologies and research on the digital in the humanities, which refers to a glimpse into the digital ages, the various phenomena involved, and so on. Buddhist studies have produced several excellent achievements in various fields of DH but the present status of buddhist studies in Korea with regard to DH seems to be fragmentary, near-sighted, and merely following the fashion of the day, rather than being a complete, systematic, and long-term one.
The fundamental reason for this situation could be the lack of focus on the field in contemporary Korea. In other words, it could reflect indifference in the attitude of the people. To resolve this, we need to figure out the fundamental characteristics of the digital phenomena and DH. I assume that digital phenomena are nothing but a new way of expressing people's desire, and DH is an efficient method to research it.
The very essence of buddhist studies is to analyze and understand people's life from the perspective of buddhism and help them lead happier lives. If so, buddhist studies should focus on providing buddhist answers to the digital phenomena by means of DH for people who are addicted to smartphones all day long, abandoning their families and friends in order to find Pocketmons in Pocketmon Go. |
