| Abstract | 본고는 동대사 도서관에 소장되어 있는 『대방광불화엄경』(이하 동대사 『화엄경』)권12-20의 節略여부에 따른 절략양상과 화엄사상적 특징을 고찰한 것이다. 동대사 『화엄경』은 80권 『화엄경』 권12-20(총9권 15품)의 내용을 약 30% 잔존시켜 절략한 한 부의 합권경으로서, 정창원 『화엄경』 권72-80과 동일한 신라사경인 것으로 간주되고 있다. 이 동대사 『화엄경』의 권별과 품별 잔존율이 각각 다른 절략양상을 보면 여래명호품 부터 십행품 까지 전체 흐름의 졸가리를 잘 이해할 수 있도록 배려하면서 반복되는 부분을 생략하였다. 그리고 경문이 중간중간 생략되더라도 본문 이외의 언구는 추가하지 않고 원문에 있는 문구만으로도 아주 자연스럽게 잘 연결시키고 있다. 각 품의 시작부분부터 시작해서 내용의 핵심, 중복 내지 반복형식의 내용에 있어서 처음과 대표되는 부분, 그리고 결론적인 마지막 부분을 거의 남기고 있는 것이다. 품의 말미 대부분에서 보이고 있는 一中多一卽多의 무진연기를 설하는 부분 또한 거의 살려내고 있다. 동대사 『화엄경』이 담고 있는 내용의 사상적 특징은 불과나 불세계 장엄의 묘사보다 보살의 신심과 신심에 바탕한 수행방편을 중시한 것이라 하겠다. 특히 신심을 돈독히 하는 140원과 발심보살의 구체적 10바라밀, 그리고 출가보살의 10종 관행에 초점을 두었음이 분명히 드러난다.이러한 절략의 특징을 통해 8세기경 신라시대에 실천되고 전개되어간 구체적인 화엄보살행을 미루어 알 수 있다고 하겠다.
This paper aims at clarifying the methods of abridging in the abridged Hwaeomgyeong which was scribed in the Silla dynasty and is presently stored at the Library of Todaiji, Japan(hereafter the Todaiji Hwaeomgyeong) and revealing the meanings of the scriber's/scribers' intention in respect of Hwaeom thoughts.
The Todaiji Hwaeomgyeong is shortened at the rate of 30 percent from the volume 12 to 20 of the 80-volume Hwaeomgyeong, known to be indentical with the volume 72 to 80 of the Hwaeomgyeong stored at Shosoin(正倉院), Japan.
Regarding the methods of abridging, this manages to represent faithfully the synopsis from the chapter ‘Names of the Buddha’ to the chapter ‘Ten Practices’. This abridged sūtra, without any insertion of new wordings, succeeds in connecting the whole contents by means of collecting the first, the main and the last parts in a repeating structure. This sūtra also contains core concepts on inexhaustible dependent arising without obstruction of the sūtra at the same time.
As for the ideological characteristics of the abridgement, this sūtra seems to focus on the means of bodhisattvas' practices rather than the adornment for buddha-fruits. Especially this sūtra emphasizes the 140 practices under vows, the 10 pāramitas of bodhisattvas who have arisen the aspiration for enlightenment and the 10 practices of meditation of renunciant bodhisattvas.
These characteristics show us more details on the bodhisattva practices of the Hwaeom tradition in the Silla dynasty. |
