| Abstract | 본 연구는 『사익경』에 관한 서설적(序說的)인 연구로 중국불교학자들의 관심을 따라가면서 중국불교에서의 『사익경』의 위치를 고찰해본 것이다. 최초기에 발견되는 서문이나 『대지도론소』 등에 서술된 내용을 통해 중국불교학자들의 이해를 살펴보았다. 또한 5시 교판에서 반야와 방등의 관계를 살펴보았다. 그 결과는 크게 두 가지로 정리할 수 있다. 첫째, 『대지도론』에 인용된 『지심경』 문장을 통해서 문헌의 수정가필을 확인하는 사례를 제시할 수 있었다. 『대지도론』에 인용된 『지심경』은 『사익경』이 한역된 이후에 수정보완되는 과정을 거쳤다. 이것은 처음 구마라집이 번역할 당시에는 『사익경』이 없었으며, 구마라집이 『사익경』을 번역한 후 구마라집 혹은 다른 사람에 의해서 부분적으로 『사익경』의 용어나 내용으로 교체되었음을 의미한다. 나아가 북지의 지도론사였던 혜영의 『대지도론소』를 통해서 법성과 불성을 융합하려고 하는 모습이 『지심경』 관련 해석 내용에서 드러난다. 둘째, 동일하게 공, 반야(바라밀), 보살행 등을 주요한 내용으로 하고 있는데도, 교판에서 반야경과 구별되는 방등경에 대한 학자들의 견해를 『사익경』을 중심으로 따라가면서, 방등시와 반야시를 어떻게 구별하고자 했는지 살펴보았다. 『사익경』은 공종(空宗)으로 반야경을 설하는 때 함께 서술되기도 하지만, 반야의 차제를 논하면서는 구분되기도 한다. 북지에서는 『사익경』을 『능가경』과 더불어 여래장 계통의 경전으로 보는 학자도 있었다. 그러나 교상으로서도 완전하게 분리되기 어렵고, 시간의 차제를 논할 때에도 일관되지는 않으므로 점차 비판을 받게 된다.
The Brahmaviśeṣacintīparipṛcchāa (hereinafter referred to as Bp), composed at India on the basis of the ideas of emptiness and non-duality, was translated earlier into Chinese under the title of Chixinfantiansuowenjing (持心梵天所問經) by Dharmarakṣa (竺法護). This sutra belongs to the first group of Mahayana scriptures composed earlier than the completion of the Lotus Sutra, since it is supposed to have been composed at the same time as the VimalakīrtiNirdeśa. This sutra has been used as one of the most important scriptural references in the Indian and Tibetan commentaries belonging to the traditions of Mādhyamaka and Yogācāra, although it has not been studied as to its status and importance in East Asia. This study of Chinese versions of it reveals the following two features.
Firstly, the original text of the Bp cited in the Mahāprajñāpāramitāśāstra (大智 度論) was corrected and compensated since its full translation into Chinese. That is, at the time of Kumārajīva's translation of the latter work, there was no translation of it so that the terms and contents related to the Bp might have been substituted into it by himself after his translation of the sutra or by others.
Secondly, the Bp, cited in the theories of doctrinal classification according to 5 periods by Chinese Buddhist scholars, reveals the perspective of separating Vaipulya and Prajñāpāramitā teachings. In addition, in the northern region of China, there were, we have ascertained, scholars who regarded this sutra as belonging with the Lankavatara Sūtra to the tradition of the Buddha nature within each sentient being. Especially, there were evidently some Buddhist scholars who interpreted this sutra in closer relation with Buddha nature.
This study is very important in that it can be an exemplary study of characteristics of the transmission and reception of the Vaipulya scriptures composed at India into East Asia.
