| Abstract | 구가리는 釋迦族 출신의 인물로 붓다의 카필라 귀향시점에 석가족들의 다수가 출가할 무렵 제바달다(提婆達多)와 함께 출가하여 破僧伽이후까지 제바달다(提婆達多)를 돕는 제바달다의 최측근 인사이다. 그런데 다른 파승가의 핵심동조자들과는 달리 구가리에게는 초기의 전적들에서부터 비극적인 최후와 지옥에 간 내용이 다수 기록되어 있어 주의가 요구된다. 구가리의 최후와 관련된 기록들은 후대로 갈수록 더욱더 증광되어 무간지옥에 그것도 산 채로 갔다는 기록에까지 이르고 있다. 出家人중 生陷地獄者로 기록된 대표적인 인물은 파승가의 能破者인 제바달다이다. 구가리 역시 파승가의 핵심동조자로써 이와 깊은 관련이 있다. 그런데 구가리와 같은 경우는 파승가와 관련해서 지옥의 과보를 받는 것이 아니라, 舍利弗과 目건連에 대한 비방으로 이러한 과보를 얻은 것으로 되어 있어 의문을 자아낸다. 구가리가 붓다가 아닌 사리불과 목건련을 비방한 것임에도 불구하고 불교의 최고 단죄에 처해지고, 또한 구가리가 관여하고 있는 중대한 과실인 파승가 보다도 이러한 비방의 문제가 더 심각하게 다루어지고 있는 것은 매우 이례적이라고 할 만하다. 그러므로 이에 관한 충분한 고찰의 의의를 확보한다. 본고는 구가리의 최후양상과 과보가 승단의 어떠한 문제와 연결되어 이와 같은 단죄양상을 파생하기에까지 이르렀는지에 대해 고찰해 본 것이다. 이를 위해서 필자는 먼저 구가리의 사리불과 목건련에 대한 비방과 그 의미를 모색해 보고, 이를 바탕으로 구가리의 최후 양태 속에서 나타나는 문제점에 관한 파악을 시도해 보고자 하였다. 구가리는 초기불교에 있어서 가장 문제가 많은 인물 중 한 명임에 틀림이 없다. 그러나 그렇다고 해서 아무렇게나 처리하고 끝낼 수 있는 권리가 불교승단에 있는 것은 아니라고 생각한다. 그러므로 이에 대한 보다 정확한 양상의 파악은 초기불교의 관점에 대한 이해와 아울러 불교의 합리적인 발전을 위해서 반드시 요청되는 측면이 아닌가 한다.
Kokālika is the person of Sakia Tribe who left home along with Devadatta when many of Sakia Tribe left home at Buddha's return to Kapila-vastu and became Devadatta's closest associate helping him even after the saṃgha-bheda. Yet, unlike other key followers of the saṃgha-bheda, Kokālika is noteworthy in that he was frequently told to have met the tragic fate and fallen into the hell even by many early traditions.
The records related with Kokālika's fate expanded on and on in the later days and even there came a record that he was thrown into Avici-niraya in the living state. A typical person who was thrown into Avici-niraya in the living state among the bhikkhus is Devadatta who led the saṃgha-bheda. Kokālika is also a key member of the saṃgha-bheda and has a deep relation with it. But, Kokālika received the karma of hell not because of his participation in the saṃgha-bheda but because of his blame to Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana. So, it makes us doubtful about his punishment.
It is extra ordinary that Kokālika was given the most terrible punishment of Buddhism just because of his blame to Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana rather than to Buddha and furthermore that the blame was treated more seriously than the saṃgha-bheda in which Kokālika had participated. Therefore, this aspect deserves our full consideration.
This paper is to consider what problems of saṃgha were connected with Kokālika's last state and karma to product such punishment. For this, the author tries to investigate the Kokālika's blame to Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana along with its significance. On the basis of this, the problems shown in Kokālika's last state are comprehended.
To be sure, Kokālika was one of the most problematic persons in the early
Buddhism. But it is hard to think that Buddhist denomination had the right to treat his state arbitrarily. Therefore, the correct comprehension of his state seems inevitable for the understanding of early Buddhist viewpoint and the reasonable development of Buddhism. |
