AbstractThe purpose of this study is to search for the flow of modern and contemporary Chinese Buddhism and reflect the problem of study method from the aspect of the modernity that China has not experienced for several thousand years. The contemporary Buddhism study trend of China can be classified into Chinese Buddhist study and International Buddhist study, which is affected by western and Japanese Buddhism. First of all, the Chinese Buddhist studies include Chinese Buddhist study, which is included in History of Chinese thought, and doctrinal study within Buddhism world. Especially, Chinese Buddhist study regarded as History of Chinese thought or History of Chinese philosophy. Therefore, there is a natural trend to consider Chinese Buddhism depending on the History of Chinese thought. On the contrary, International Buddhism study, which has a relationship with western or Japanese Buddhism, means the Buddhist study originated from the tradition of Indian study based on European study. International Buddhism study of China, which is founded on the viewpoint, has a trend to disregard the unique Chinese Buddhist study. Its reason is that Chinese Buddhism is leant to literature so historical recognition over it is absent and methodology of modern and contemporary Buddhism study is weak. The method and subject of modern and contemporary Chinese Buddhist study forces change and challenge on unique Chinese Buddhist study. From the aspect, the study method of 'Buddhist China Institute for Inner Learning' (支那內學院) has an important meaning for modern study foundation and contemporary thought history of China. Especially, Inner learning (內學) method of Ouyang Jingwu (歐陽竟無) that grasps reason and interprets sutra is an empirical study method that interprets sutra on the assumption of Buddha's words. A study on the Inner learning, which applies study method of contemporary reason to Buddhism study, is evaluated as an important means to secure originality and objectivity.
