| Abstract | 정토신앙을 이행도라고 말한다. 그러나 그것은 “나무아미타불” 염불을 하는 것을 기점으로 해서 하는 말이다. 문제는 “나무아미타불” 염불을 어떻게 할 수 있겠는가 하는 점이다. 어렵고도 어렵다. 옛날에도 그러했겠지만, 근대의 자연과학 혁명 이후에 살아가는 사람들에게는 더욱더 어렵다고 말해야 할 것이다. 지금은 극락세계의 존재가 확실히 증명되지 않는 한, 그것을 전제로 한 “나무아미타불”의 염불은 의미가 없다고 하는 시대이다. 극락의 존재여부를 논증하는 데 따르는 이러한 여러 가지 난점은 나로 하여금 자연과학적인 논증에 호소할 수 없게 하는 것과 마찬가지로 불교적인 논증에 대해서도 의지하지 않게 하였다. 이 글에서는 존재증명을 시도하는 대신 극락의 존재여부 자체가 문제되지 않았던 염불행자들의 신심의 세계를 찾아보거나 새롭게 해답을 제시하고자 했다. 일본 정토진종의 개조 신란과 시종의 개조 잇펜에게는 이미 극락의 존재여부가 전혀 문제되지 않는 경지가 있었다. 또 신라 화엄종의 개조 의상에게도, 비록 그것이 관세음보살과의 관계 속에서 논의된 관점이긴 하지만, 그것을 아미타불에 대한 것으로 전화(轉化)함으로써 극락의 존재여부가 무의미할 수도 있는 논리가 있었다. 신란은 아미타불의 본원의 진실을 보고서 믿으라고 하였고, 잇펜은 지옥과 극락 모두 버리고 염불하라고 하였다. 또 의상으로부터는 아미타불이 되어서 극락을 건설하라는 메시지를 도출할 수 있었다. 신란과 잇펜의 입장은 일본불교의 정토사상사에서 정립된 것이다. 정토사상은 신란을 거쳐서 잇펜에 이르러 극치에 이른 것으로 평가된다. 그렇지만 나는 다시 거기에서 의상으로 돌아오는 관점을 제시하였다. 이는 타력의 극치에서 다시 자력이 열리는 것이니, 여기에 이르러서는 이미 타력과 자력의 분별은 아무런 의미가 없게 된다.
Pure Land thought(Jeongtosasang:淨土思想) is called as Easy Way Path(Ihaeng-do:易行道). It is based on reciting the name of Buddha, “Namo Amitābha”. However, the possibility of recitation can be questionable. This has been an issue in the past and still for those who are living in the modern age after the natural science revolution. Unless the existence of the Pure Land (Geukrak:極樂) is verified, verbally chanting “Namo Amitabha” is meaningless on the premise that Pure Land exists. Several difficulties in proving the existence of the Pure Land not only discouraged me from appealing toward the natural scientific argumentations but also prevented me from relying on Buddhist argumenta- tions. This study aimed to seek or establish the faith of chanting practitioners who hardly pay attention to the existence of Pure Land. Shinran(親鸞, 1173-1262), the founder of the Japanese Shin-Buddhism, and Ippen(一遍1239-1290), the founder of Shijong(時宗), had reached the stage in which they tolerate the existence of Pure Land. In addition, Uisang(義相, 625-702), founder of Avataṃsaka Order (Whaeomjong: 華嚴宗) in Shilla had the logic; despite it was not directly stated in the relationship with Amitāyus, the presence or absence of Pure Land could be meaningless by shifting the viewpoint discussed in the relationship with Bodhisattva of Great Compassion(Avalokiteśvara bodhisattva: 觀世音菩薩) into the one regarding Amitābha Buddha(Amitāyus: 阿彌陀佛). Shinran insisted faith upon seeing the truth of the vow of Amitāyus whereas Ippen claimed to verbally chant after renouncing Pure Land and Hell. Furthermore, Uisang asserted to establish Pure Land after becoming Amitayus. The beliefs of Shinran and Ippen have been established in the history of Pure Land thought in Japan. Pure Land thought is remarked to have reached the climax at Ippen after Shinran. I introduced the perspective which pays attention Uisang, whose theory suggests that self-power begins at the highest level of other-power. Therefore, distinguishing self-power and other-power already becomes meaningless at that level. |
