AbstractThis article categorizes 105 Buddhist feature movies and documentary films, excluding Buddhist short films and TV dramas, from 1927 to 2013 in the eight periods, (1) 3 films in the colonial period (1910-1945), (2) 7 films from liberation in 1945 to the April 19 Revolution in 1960, (3) 17 films in the earlier part of Park Chung-hee’s (Bak Jeonghui) (1917-1979) military dictatorship (1961-1979), (4) 18 films in the later period of his regime in the 1970s, (5) 6 films during Chun Doo-hwan’s (Jeon Duhwan) (b. 1931) military dictatorial regime (1980-1988), (6) 13 films for Roh Tae-woo’s (No Tae’u) (b. 1932) semi-democratic and semi-dictatorial regime (1988-1993), (7) 10 films from 1993 to 1999 under the democratic governments, and (8) 31 films from the year 2000 and so on. It examines thematic groupings of Buddhist films by Buddhist (religious) scholars and film critics, and attempts to define themes in films. By incorporating thematic classifications by six specialists in religion and film including Park Jongcheon, Sin Gwangcheol, Choe Wonseop and John Whalen-Bridge, it groups 105 films sometimes interchangeably in eleven themes, (1) 16 films that include the theme of state protectionism, (2) 5 films that include the theme of filial piety, (3) 15 films that include themes related with Buddhist practices, (4) 13 films that include legends and fables, (5) 3 martial arts/comedy films, (6) 10 films that introduce historical figures, (7) 38 films that heavily contain the contents of Buddhist texts, (8) 31 films based on modern novels, (9) 14 films that include themes such as karma, retribution and reincarnation, (10) 5 science fiction fantasy films, and (11) 6 films that discuss social issues such as interfaith cooperation, class discrimination, reunification, human rights, and the environment.
