The later Yogācāra school was founded by Dignāga (ca. 480-540) and was elaborated by Dharmakīrti (ca. 600-660). It deals with the issue of the path to enlightenment in the epistemological context. The path is based on both Buddhist theory and meditative practice. The yogi learns what is true, such as the Four Noble Truths, investigates their meanings, and then realizes them through tranquility (śamatha) and insight (vipaśyanā). Enlightenment is achieved when such a process is perfected. The object of enlightenment is dharma and dharmin. The dharmin is a thing (vastu) (i.e., a momentary thing), while the dharma is the true nature of things, (e.g., momentariness). During the course of meditation, dharma is directly realized in the process of clear manifestation (viśada-ābhā) and dharmin is indirectly directed in the process of determination (adhyavasāya). So, even though the yogi does not directly perceive a thing, he is still nonetheless able to undertake practical activity directed toward it. The realization of truth in this school is twofold. One is for the yogi to manifest the truth in his stream of consciousness; the other is for him to realize the truth in the face of whatever he sees and meets. Enlightenment is attained when the yogi’s being aware of the nature of all things while at the same time also being aware of things themselves so as to practically engage with them.
