Abstract | This dissertation is particularly seeking to share knowledge and promote greater integration of Buddhist philosophy into a Western coaching practice, and as such it aims to document the benefits from integrating mindfulness skills training into the field of coaching. The key focus is how human performance can be enhanced by the integration of cognitive behavior solution focused (CB-SF) coaching and mindfulness skills training. To set the scene, it is important to define and explain the concepts of mindfulness and coaching. Chapter Two outlines the origin of Mindfulness with an introduction to Buddhist philosophy, values and ethics. Chapter Three outlines the origin and current situation of the coaching industry. The term “coaching” is introduced and is distinguished from other forms of human assistance (such as psychotherapy, mentoring, training and counseling). Next, coaching is presented in a historic perspective including an introduction to positive pshycology as a part of the human potential movement. Chapter Four outlines the theory of Early Buddhist psychology and the relevance Mindfulness Meditation has in Buddhism. Chapter Five Integrates Buddhist psychology and the concept of mindfulness into the Mindfulness Based Coaching Model. The Model is described in great detail and examples of techniques, exercises and outcome of the coaching process is elaborated. Chapter Six is the last chapter that summarizes the theories with the practical aspect of applying Mindfulness Based Coaching in a Western change oriented society. |
