| Abstract | 지난 20여 년이래 경량부(Sautrāntika) 기원에 관한 문제는 해외 불교학계의 주요 관심사였지만, 世親(Vasubandhu)과 동시대를 살았고 그의 『구사론』을 광범위하게 비판하고 있는 衆賢(Samghabhadra)의 『순정리론』을 이용한 경량부 연구는 거의 이루어지지 않고 있다. 본고에서는 『순정리론』의 문맥을 통해 이 논서 상에서 ‘上座’로 일컬어진 슈리라타(Śrīlāta)라는 인물과 그의 『經部毘婆沙』의 존재에 대해 밝혀 보고자 하였는데, 요지는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 슈리라타가 『經部毘婆沙』를 지었다고 한 玄奘 계통의 전승은 정확한 것이라 할 수 있다. 둘째, 슈리라타는 중현(혹은 세친) 당시 다수의 제자 문인을 거느린 경량부의 上座(연륜과 학식이 높은 교단의 리더)였으며, 그의 명성은 인도전역에 미치고 있었다. 이에 따라 중현은 당시 경량부를 ‘上座宗’, 혹은 ‘上座徒黨’(Sthavirapāksika?)으로 호칭하기도 하였다. 셋째, 당시 그의 본거지는 北方의 카슈미르에 대응하는 東方이었는데, 이는 그가 『경부비바사』를 지은 곳이라 전해지는 阿踰陀國으로 비정된다. 넷째, 세친은 슈리라타의 제자는 아니었지만, 그(혹은 『經部毘婆沙』)로부터 많은 영향을 받았다. 따라서 “현존자료 중에서 ‘경량부’라는 말의 初出은 세친의『구사론』”이라는 加藤純章의 주장에 기초하여 제시된 경량부 기원에 관한 일련의 가설, 예컨대 “『구사론』상에 인용된 경량부 설은 세친 자신의 학설이다”(加藤純章)거나, “유가행파의 학설을 경량부라는 명칭으로 설한 것, 다시 말해 ‘경량부’라는 부파는 架空의 명칭일 뿐이다”(原田和宗 등)는 가설은 재검토되지 않으면 안 된다.
For the last twenty-odd years, the question about the origin of Sautrāntika has been an urgent matter of concern in the foreign Buddhist circles. But a study on Sautrāntika by using the Nyāyānusāra śāstra of Samghabhadra that was not only contemporary with Vasubandhu but also widely criticized his Abhidharmakośabhāsya has scarcely been made. Through the context of Nyāyānusāra śāstra, this thesis tried to clarify the figure named Śrīlata with the title of 'Sthavira' on this text and the existence of his Sautrāntika Vibhāsā. The essential points are as follows. First, it can be said that the handing down by the Hsüan-tsang school saying that Śrīlata had made Sautrāntika Vibhāsā was accurate. Secondly, Śrīlata, as the elder of Sautrāntika(a leader of the order with high learning of old age) who had led a large number of literary disciples in the contemporary times with Samghabhadra(or Vasubandhu), had his reputation spread throughout India. According to it, Samghabhadra also called Sautrāntika of those days Sthavra' school(pāksika). Thirdly, he settled down in the east, which is comparatively decided as Ayodhā. Fourthly, Vasubandhu was not Śrīlata's disciple, but much affected by him(or his Sautrāntika Vibhāsā). Thus, a series of hypotheses about the origin of Sautrāntika which had been presented based on Kato Junsho's assertion that "it was in Vasubandhu's Abhidharmakośabhāsya among existing materials that the term of 'Sautrāntika' appeared for the first time", for example, the hypothesis that "the doctrine of Sautrāntika quoted on Abhidharmakośabhāsya is of Vasubandhu's own"(Kato Junsho) and the hypothesis that "the sect which has explained Yogācāra's doctrine in the name of Sautrāntika, in other words, the sect of 'Sautrāntika' is only a fictitious name"(Harada Wasō and others) should be reexamined. |
