This study is an attempt to identify the poetry world of Korea's representative Zen poet Hyesim (whose Buddhist name is Jingak Guksa) with a focus on "gyesong," or Buddhist texts in verse. In order to do this, the study examined the process through which the gyesong was positioned as a genre of Zen poetry with thedevelopment of Zen Buddhism. Subsequently, it made a survey of Hyesim's gyesong works appearing in old books such as Sijip, Eorok, and Seonmun Yeomsong. For such a survey, his poetry was divided into three kinds of poems: changgyeongsi (poems in praise of the Sutras), songgosi (poems in praise of Buddhist names), and myeonghosong (poems in praise of catechetical questions for meditation). The results can be summarized as follows: First, Hyesim's changgyeongsi poems suggest that Goryeo's Zen poetry had more advanced style features, as many of them are in the style of Chinese poetry (geunchesi). Second, a large number of songgosi poems were written for popularization of Ganhwaseon (which refers to and works on the questions for Buddhist meditation). Songgosi is a verse form that was first embodied by Hyesim and provides insights into his unique and distinctive ideas. In particular, his songgosi poems can be highly recognized in history of poetry for opening up a new field in Zen poetry. Third, Hyesim encouraged his disciples to explore Zhen-based meaning reflected in his Buddhist name and find enlightenment ultimately by writing myeonghosong poems for them. As his myeonghosong poetry was inherited by Naong and Chungji, a great number of myeonghosong works werewritten during the last years of Goryeo Dynasty. A wide variety of Hyesim's gyesong works not only represent an axis in the world of his Zen poetry, but also provide typical examples of Seongye (Zen Buddhist texts). Therefore, these discussions about his works will serve as a basis for understanding traditional Korean gyesong literature.
