| Abstract | 원효의 화쟁사상은 서로 대립하는 견해들을 조화통일시킴으로서 다툼을 없애고 의견을 통합하는 사상으로 이해되어 왔다. 하지만 원효의 화쟁사상은 7세기 후반 신라사회에서 대립하고 있던 異見들을 조절하기 위하여 제시된 것이 아니라 불교학에서 전개되는 혹은 전개될 수 있는 다양한 논의들을 종합하기 위한 이론의 성격이 강하다. 원효의 화쟁사상은 다양한 교학을 연구하면서 각각의 교학적 이론들 사이에 생기는 모순점과 차이점을 극복할 수 있는 종합적 교학을 추구하는 과정에서 제시된 것이었다.원효는 모든 존재들이 근본적으로 동일하다는 普法사상에 의거하여 모든 차별과 대립들이 사라진 본질적인 세계를 추구하였고, 화쟁사상은 이를 반영하면서 동시에 이러한 세계로 도달하기 위한 이론적 틀이었다. 원효의 普法的 사고방식에서는 모든 존재들은 본질적으로 동일한 것으로 여겨지고, 개별 존재들의 차이는 단지 부차적인 것으로 생각되고 있다. 개별 존재의 고유성은 인정되지 않았고, 모든 존재의 차이는 동일한 사물의 서로 다른 반영으로 간주되었다. 모든 존재의 본래적 동일함은 전지전능한 부처의 존재, 혹은 진리의 본래적 유일함에서 비롯된 것이었다. 결국 원효의 화쟁은 본래 동일한 것의 서로 다른 측면들이 자신들의 동일함을 확인하는 것이었고, 이러한 점에서 원효의 화쟁사상은 종교적 사고방식으로서는 유효하였지만 현실세계의 차별과 異見까지를 해소할 수 있는 이론이었다고는 보기 힘들다.
It has been thought that Wonhyo's Hwajaeng(和諍) theory which emphasizes harmonizing all the different or disputing thoughts was proposed to settle all the arguments between the Buddhist schools. But in the 7th century Shilla society where Wonhyo's Hwajaeng is proposed we can hardly find any philosophical conflict between the Buddhist schools or scholars. So we can think that Hwajaeng was proposed not to settle the philosophical conflicts of the time but synthesize all the thoughts and ideas shown in the Buddhist sutras and commentaries to them. To the contrary to other Buddhist scholars of the time who Wonhyo did not belong to any special school and tried to study all the Buddhist theories. In doing so he found the inconsistencies and contradictions between the Buddhist theories and tried to make a universal theory which can cover all the inconsistencies and differences. Hwajaeng is the result of this endeavor.
Wonhyo thought all the beings are fundamentally equal and the differences and conflicts are made by human illusion. He systemized this thought as the Bobeop(普法), the total equality. His Hwajaeng theory is the reflection of this Bobeop thought and also the method to reach the essential state where there was no difference and conflicts. In his Bobeop thought all the beings are regarded as essentially equal and the individual differences are regarded as trivial or illusory. According to the Bobeop the specific property of individual being cannot be admitted; the differences of all the beings are regarded as the reflection of the different aspects of the same thing. In this respect it can be said that Wonhyo's Hwajaeng is not the harmonization of the differences and conflicts between the others but just the ascertainment of the sameness between the different aspects of the same thing.
