| Abstract | 이 논문은 초기경전과 미륵경전을 중심으로 ‘미륵사상’의 경전성립사적 기원과 전개에 관해 고찰한 것이다. 불교의 미륵사상은 태양을 신격화한 이란의 종교, 즉 미트라교(Mithraism)에서 유래한 것으로 추정된다. 또 미륵사상은 온갖 괴로움으로 가득 찬 인간사회에서 괴로움이 없는 세계, 즉 이상세계를 그리워하는 염원에서 나온 것이다. 미륵사상에 관한 문헌자료는 크게 초기경전과 미륵경전 둘로 구분할 수 있다. 초기경전에 따르면 미륵사상은 단번에 성립된 것이 아니다. 그리고 미륵경전은 초기경전을 근거로 점차 체계화된 것이다. 특히 미륵계열 경전 중에서 축법호(竺法護, 239-316)가 번역한 『미륵하생경(彌勒下生經)』은 『증일아함경』 제44권 제3경을 별도로 편집한 것이다. 그리고 구마라집(鳩摩羅什, 344-413 또는 350-409)이 402년에 번역한 『미륵대성불경(彌勒大成佛經)』은 미륵의 하생에 관한 다섯 경전 중에서 가장 잘 정비된 것이라고 평가받는다. 한편 미륵의 상생에 관해 설한 경전은 저거경성(沮渠京聲, 미상-464)이 455년에 번역한 『관미륵보살상생도솔천경(觀彌勒菩薩上生兜率天經)』이다. 경전성립사적으로 보아 미륵사상은 미륵의 하생(下生) 사상이 먼저 성립되고, 나중에 미륵의 상생(上生) 사상이 성립된 것으로 보인다. 이러한 미륵경전을 근거로 두 가지 유형의 미륵신앙이 형성되었다. 하나는 『미륵하생경』에 근거하여 미륵보살이 도솔천(兜率天)에서 내려와 성도 후 세 차례 설법하는 용화삼회(龍華三會)를 만나 미륵불의 설법을 듣고자 하는 신앙이다. 다른 하나는 『관미륵보살상생도솔천경』에 근거하여 사후에 도솔천에 왕생하여 친히 미륵보살의 설법을 듣고자 하는 신앙이다. 그러나 중국에서는 비슷한 시기에 미륵신앙과 미타신앙이 번성하여 서로 대립했다. 한때 미륵신앙은 크게 번성했으나 나중에는 아미타불 신앙에 밀려나고 말았다.
This paper examines the origin and development of ‘Maitreya Thought’ with a focus on the Early Scriptures and Maitreya Scriptures. The idea of Maitreya in Buddhism is presumed to have originated from Mithraism, an Iranian religion that deified the sun. In addition, Maitreya thought comes from the longing for an ideal world free from all kinds of suffering in human society. According to the Early Scriptures, the idea of Maitreya was not established all at once. And the Maitreya Scriptures were gradually systematized on the basis of the Early Scriptures. In particular, 'Maitreya-vyākaraṇa(彌勒下生經)' translated by Dharmarakṣa(竺法護), among the sūtras of the Maitreya series, is a separate compilation of the 'Ekottarika-āgama(增一阿含經)', Volume 44, 3rd Sūtra. On the other hand, the ‘Mireuk Great Sacred Buddha Sūtra(彌勒大成佛經)’ translated by Kumārajīva(鳩摩羅什) is considered to be the most well-organized among the five sūtras on Maitreya's descendants. However, the sūtra that deals with the coexistence of Maitreya is ‘Gwan-mireuk-bosal-sangsaeng-dosolcheon-gyeong(觀彌勒菩薩上生兜率天經)’ translated by Jeogye-geongseong(沮渠京聲). As for Maitreya Thought, it seems that Maitreya's idea of lower life was established first, and that of coexistence (upper life) was established later. Based on these Maitreya Scriptures, two types of Maitreya beliefs were formed. One belief is based on the ‘Mireuk-haseong-gyeong(彌勒下生經)’ that Maitreya Bodhisattva descends from the Tuṣita-deva(兜率天) to preach three times after enlightenment hoping to hear the sermon of the Maitreya Buddha. The other is that one wishes to be reincarnated in Tuṣita-deva after death and to hear in person the sermons of the Maitreya Bodhisattva on the basis of 'Gwan-mireuk-bosal-sangsaeng-dosolcheon-gyeong(觀彌勒菩薩上生兜率天經)'. In China, however, Maitreya faith and Amitabha faith flourished contemporary and they were opposed to each other. At one time, the Maitreya faith prospered greatly, but later it was pushed aside by the Amitabha faith.
