| Abstract | 조선시대 승과(僧科)인 선시(選試)가 과거(科擧)와 같은 형식으로 진행되었음과 함께, 선시의 형식 및 혁파에 이르는 과정을 검토하였다. 승과의 경우, 생원․진사과의 예로서 『경제육전』에 따른 시재행(試才行)이 행해졌으며, 『경국대전』 「도승(度僧)」 조에 따라 『심경』, 『금강경』, 『살달타』의 송경 및 「명칭가곡」의 송(誦)을 시험해 입격자를 중격자(中格者)라 칭했다. 중격자는 정전(丁錢) 납부 후 백패(白牌)에 준하는 도첩을 발급받았다. 도첩식 중 도첩 수급자를 학생(學生)이라 명기한 예는 도첩승이 소과(小科) 입격에 해당한 자를 뜻한 것임을 알 수 있다. 소과 입격자인 중격자는 대과에 해당하는 선시를 치렀다. 선시는 초시를 통해 양종 각 100명씩을 뽑아 입선(入選)이라 칭했으며, 이듬해 복시 때 선종은 『전등』․『염송』을, 교종은 『화엄경』 「십지론」을 시험해 양종 각 100명 중 ⅓ 정도에 해당하는 30인씩을 대선(大選)으로 뽑았다. 이어 대선을 대상으로 한 중시를 치러 6품에 해당하는 중덕(中德)과 7품 내지 8품 등 품계를 주었으며, 홍패식의 예에 따라 교지를 발급하였고, 중덕이 주지로 임명될 경우 6품의 예에 따라 고신교첩을 발급했음을 서술하였다. 한편 선시 실행과 정전 납부 후 도첩을 발급한 예, 도승 자격을 양반자제로 한정한 예는 선시가 금승(禁僧)의 예로써 시행된 것임을 말했다. 그런데 세조 연간에는 호불의 경향 속에 공사천(公私賤)에게까지 도승 자격을 부여했으며, 승인호패법과 부역을 통해 도첩승이 증대되었던 바, 이는 이후 성종 및 연산군대에 선시 폐지 및 도첩제 정지, 양종 혁파의 빌미가 되었음을 말했다. 이후 성종 20년 도첩 발급을 금지하였고, 성종 23년 반포된 『대전속록』에 ‘도승’ 조항이 삭제되었다. 그러나 이런 분위기 속에서도 1504년까지는 선시가 시행되었으며, 중종 즉위 2년(1507) 식년에 선시가 더이상 시행되지 않았던 예를 기술하였다.
This paper presents a review into the triennial examination, an examination for Buddhist monks during the Joseon Dynasty. The triennial examination was implemented in the same form as the civil examination. There was a talent test, covered Heart Sutra, Vajira Sutra, and Saldalta. The successful candidates of the test were called pre-successful candidates of the triennial examination. The pre-successful candidates of the minor civil examination were qualified for Seonsih. In the triennial examination, the first examination was taken to select 100 entrance candidates for each Zen and Science Buddhism. In the midterm examination the following year, another round of tests was conducted to cover Jeondeungrok and Seonmunyeomsong in Zen Buddhism and Hwaeomgyeong and Sipjiron in Science Buddhism and 30 students were selected, to be called grand candidates. The grand candidates would take the final examination, after which the middle virtue equivalent to the 6th base was issued. Measures were taken to forbid certain individuals from becoming a monk including the triennial examination, the monastic identity tags issued to those who paid a sum of money for the compensation of forced military duties. King Sejo, however, granted qualification for a Buddhist monk to lowly people as well. As a result, the number of Buddhist monks with a monastic identity tag increased. This was used as a pretext to abolish the triennial examination The monastic identity tags was suspended in the 20rd year of King Seongjong's reign. The provision of from becoming a monk was removed in Taezonsokrok promulgated in the 23th year of his reign. The triennial examination, however, lasted until 1504 even in the atmosphere of forbidding certain individuals from becoming a monk.
