| Abstract | 본고는 인도에 현존하는 문수조각상과 밀교경전에 나타난 문수보살의 특징을 검토하여 인도불교에서 문수신앙의 의의를 찾는데 그 목적이 있다. 문수보살이 미륵보살이나 관음보살에 비해 큰 인기를 누리지 못한 것으로 보는 기존의 관점에 의문을 갖고 인도불교 발전의 마지막 단계인 후기밀교 문헌에서 문수신앙을 고찰하였다. 이를 통하여 인도불교에서 문수신앙이 12세기까지 지속되고 성행하였음을 밝히고, 대승불교와의 연계선상에서 문수보살의 지혜를 강조한 문수 오자진언(五字眞言) 신앙을 중기 밀교경전 『오자주법(五字咒法)』에서 살펴보았다. 또한 후기 밀교경전 『나마상기띠(Nāmasaṃgīti)』와 『마하바즈라바이라바 딴뜨라(Mahāvajrabhairavatantra)』에 나타난 문수보살의 특징과 위상을 조사하였다. 중기 밀교경전에서 문수신앙은 오자진언의 염송과 그 공덕에 중점을 두었지만, 후기밀교에서 문수보살은 수행자가 관상(觀想)수행을 통하여 체득해야 할 존격(尊格)으로서 숭배된다. 그리고 문수보살이 마하바즈라바이라바(Mahāvajrabhairava)와 같은 분노존의 부족주(部族主)로서 힌두교 신들을 조복(調伏)하는 화신으로 신앙되는 배경과 특정한 존격의 성취법(sādhana)을 설한 성취자전(成就者傳)에서 수호본존(守護本尊)으로서 신앙되는 바를 고찰하였다.
The purpose of this paper lies in taking the characteristics of the existing Mañjuśri statues and the characteristics of Mañjuśri described in the Estoeric Buddha Sūtras to find the meaning of Mañjuśri faith in Indian Buddhism. This text raised a question as to why Mañjuśri is not as popular as Maitreya or Avalokiteśvara and reviewed the Mañjuśri faith based on the tantric Buddhism texts which is the last phase of Indian Buddhism development. Through this, we have discovered that the Mañjuśri faith in Indian Buddhism has continued into the 12th Century and we have reviewed the Five-syllable mantra of Mañjuśri faith which put emphasis on the wisdom of Mañjuśri related to the Mahāyāna Buddhism through the middle Esoteric Buddha Sūtra, Five-syllable Prayer Chants. Also, we have investigated the physical characteristics and descriptions of Mañjuśri in the late Esoteric Buddha Sūtras, Nāmasaṃgīti and Mahāvajrabhairavatantra. The Mañjuśri faith in the middle Esoteric Buddha Sūtras focused on the Buddhist prayers of Five-syllable mantra and his charity but the Mañjuśri in the late Esoteric Buddha Sūtras describe Mañjuśri as an entity that the disciplinants should emulate through visualization practice. Also, we have researched how Mañjuśri is worshipped as the tribal leader of wraths such as Mahāvajrabhairava and believed to be the incarnate who restrains the evil within the Hindu gods as well as being worshipped as the icon of protection in Sādhana which explains the concept of Sādhana for a specific entity.
