The Tenri Central Library in Japan has collected a Tangut version of the Mahayana Sukhāvatī-vyūhah-sūtra with an appended eulogy by ’Phags-pa entitled Bcom-ldan-detshe dang ye-shesdpag-tu-med-pa kyi padma phreng bstod pa that was translated from an original Tibetan version “on the 15th of the Buddhist shenzu month, 1293.” This manuscript is the latest block-printed version in Tangut that has yet been discovered, and the eulogy by ’Phags-pa is the only extant text with a verifiable date of translation that can be confirmed to have been translated by Imperial Preceptor Blo-gros rgyal-mtshan (the original name for ’Phags-pa). This version was completed at the Chanding Temple in Ganzhou (contemporary Zhangye city), was later temporarily relocated to the Hongfa Temple in the “Great Capital”(likely contemporary Beijing), and was finally included in the Tangut Tripitaka written by Guan Zhuba, a Buddhist master of the Yuan dynasty, in the 11th year of Dade era(1307). The discovery of this manuscript provides reliable evidence for proving that the Tangut people in areas previously controlled by the Western Xia dynasty continued to be engaged in the translation of Buddhist scriptures in the Mongolian Yuan dynasty. |
