| Abstract | This paper is intended to introduce a sūtra preserved fully in an Indian commentary on the Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinaya, a sūtra that belongs to the Saṃyuktāgama and is otherwise preserved only in a Chinese translation and some small Sanskrit manuscript fragments. The paper is also intended to provide a narrative example for discussions on humor in the vinaya. In a story narrated in the Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinaya, a sūtra titled *Jetavanasūtra is referred to in the middle of a conversation between a good monk and a bad monk. A commentary on the vinaya, the Vinayavibhaṅgapadavyākhyāna, preserves the entire contents of this sūtra. Once we go back to the story in the vinaya with knowledge of the contents of the sūtra, it becomes clear that the reference in question has a humorous function. English translations of the story and the sūtra and comparative texts of the sūtra follow the discussion as appendices. |
