| Abstract | 보현보살의 사상과 한국 아미산 장승신앙의 습합에 대해 살펴보았다. 보현보살의 명호는 널리 행원을 실천하는 보살이라는 의미를 지니고 있다. 따라서 보현보살은 실천의 보살로 알려져 왔다. 그리고 보현보살에 대해서 설하고 있는 최초의 경전으로는 『三曼陀跋陀羅菩薩經』이다. 이외에도 많은 대승경전에서 보현보살이 직접 설주가 되어 설하는 때도 있고, 참여 대중으로 등장하는 경우도 있다. 『법화경』에서는 보현보살이 흰 코끼리를 타고 있는 것으로 등장한다. 코끼리를 탄 보현보살에 대해 더 구체적으로 설명하고 있는 경전은 『佛説觀普賢菩薩行法經』이다. 그러나 『화엄경』에서는 보현보살이 코끼리와 연관시키고 있지는 않고 있다. 『화엄경』은 보현보살로 시작하여 끝맺는다고 할 정도로 설주의 역할을 하고 있다. 특히 보현보살은 39품 중 15품에서 보현보살을 중심으로 설법이 전개되고 있다. 다음으로 보현보살의 사상은 불법수호와 예경, 참회 등도 중요한 부분을 차지하고 있다. 그리고 무엇보다 보현사상의 중심은 삼매사상과 보현행원이라고 할 수 있다. 「보현삼매품」에서 보현삼매에 대해서 구체적으로 설하고 있다. 행원사상은 40권 『화엄경』 「보현행원품」에서 十種大願을 설하고 있다. 그리고 대원의 회향은 극락정토 왕생으로 하고 있다. 마지막으로 한국의 아미산 장승신앙은 娥眉山下橋의 장승이 1825년 일본의 니가다현에서 발견되었는데, 일본에서는 중국의 아미산에서 온 것으로 보았으나 필자는 한국의 장승임을 밝혔다. 따라서 이 橋柱는 우리나라의 전통적인 장승이며, 여기에 防痘法의 일환으로 아미산의 보현신앙과 습합된 것으로 보인다. 이로 인하여 보현보살신앙이 장승신앙과 하나로 결합된 것으로 보인다.
Chanting of Samanta-bhadra-maha-bodhisattva’s name implies to practice the Samanta-bhadra-maha-bodhisattva’s vow. Samanta-bhadra -maha-bodhisattva is known as the Bodhisattva of practice. San man t'o pa t'o lo p'u sa ching (三曼陀跋陀羅菩薩經) is the earliest sutra on which Samanta-bhadra-maha-bodhisattva’s name appears. Samanta-bhadra-maha-bodhisattva appears as the speaker or an audience in many sutras. In Lotus Sutra is he riding a white elephant. Kuan p'u hsien p'u hsing fa ching (觀普賢菩薩行法經) more concretely describes how he is riding an elephant. Hua-yen Sutra, however, does not relate him to an elephant, although he is the main speaker. Hua-yen Sutra begins and ends with his speech. He is the main speakers of the fifteen chapters among the thirty nine chapters of Hua-yen Sutra. Protecting the Buddha, admiring the Buddha, and penitence are also important in Samanta-bhadra-maha-bodhisattva thought. Above all Samadhi and Samanta-bhadra-maha-bodhisattva’s vow are the core of Samanta-bhadra-maha-bodhisattva thought. Samanta-bhadra-maha Samadhi is concretely explained in the Samanta-bhadra-maha Samadhi chapter. In the Samanta-bhadra-maha-bodhisattva’s Vow chapter of the Forty Volume Hua-yen Sutra is stated the Ten Great Vows. The returning of the great vows concluded with the rebirth in the Pure Land. The lanky man of the Gabesan bridge (娥眉山下橋), which is related to Lanky Man Belief in Korea, was found in Nikada, Japan, in 1825. It has been known that the lanky man came from Mt. Ami in China, but I verified that it came from Korea. The lanky man is a traditional Korean lanky man and is combined with Samanta-bhadra-maha-bodhisattva belief on Mt. Ami as a method of preventing smallpox. This seems to be the way how Samanta-bhadra-maha-bodhisattva belief and lanky man belief is merged. |
