Abstract | Chushi Fanqi 楚石梵琦 (1300-1370) was a significant monk granted with the honorary title of Fori Puzhao Huibian Chushi Chan Master (Fori Puzhao Huibian Chushi Chanshi 佛日普照慧辯楚石禪師) in the late Yuan and early Ming Dynasty, who was praised with very high status in both dynasties. His oral record (yulu 語錄) contains twenty fascicles, in which most of his Chan teaching are included in fascicles one to seven. Therefore, this paper endeavors to investigate Chushi’s life based on his biographical sources, and also his Chan teachings based on the Oral Record of Chan Master Chushi Fanqi (Chushi fanqi chanshi yulu 楚石梵琦禪師語錄). Chushi’s essential teaching concepts will be discussed, such as: the original mind is the way (pingchang xin shi dao 平常心是道), integrating meditation practices and doctrinal teachings (chan jiao heyi 禪教合一), and literary Chan (wenzi chan 文字禪). |
