| Abstract | 이상으로 純禪時代의 念佛禪이라고 하는 용어의 선택에 대한 문제점과 그 동안 염불선이라는 수행법이 남용된 문제점을 살펴보았다. 純禪이나 純禪時代라는 말은 怱滑谷快天가 처음으로 사용한 것으로 보인다. 그는 중국에 달마에서 육조대까지의 선법과 시대를 두고 말하였다. 그러나 학계에서 크게 주목 받지 못한 학설을 60여년 뒤에 柳田聖山이 『祖堂集』에 관심을 가지면서 주목하기 시작하였다. 그렇지만 그는 이 시대를 『조당집』에 나오는 인물들을 모두 여기에 포함시키므로 唐代의 선승들을 의미하게 되었다. 그런데 이러한 학설을 우리나라에서는 청화스님이 인용하였다. 그러나 이 학설에 대한 반론도 많으며, 초기 중국선을 단순히 순수하다고만 할 수는 없을 것이다. 다음으로 염불선에 대한 견해이다. 달마는 『楞伽經』을 중심으로 선법을 지도하고 전하였다고 한다. 이는 淨覺의 『楞伽師資記』의 발굴로 알려지게 되었다. 즉 달마의 선법은 여래장사상 중심이었다고 할 수 있다. 그래서 一心과 一行三昧 및 一相三昧를 중시하므로 자연스럽게 念佛修行과 관련되게 되었다. 특히 道信의 『入道安心要方便法門』과 弘忍의 『最上乘論』에서도 강조하였다. 그러나 念佛禪이라는 최초의 출처는 五祖弘忍의 제자 중 果閬宣什이 南山念佛門禪宗의 傳香存佛法에서 유래를 찾아야 할 것이다. 초기선종에서 염불선이라는 수행법은 주로 觀念念佛을 중심으로 한 實相念佛을 지칭한 말이다. 그런데 후래에 와서 이를 모두 念佛禪이라고 말하는 것에는 문제가 있다고 본다. 마지막으로 청화스님의 염불선에 관한 것이다. 스님의 염불선에 대한 견해는 주로 實相念佛을 말한다. 그런데 왜 실상염불이라고 하면 될 것인데 하필 염불선이라고 주창한 것인가에 대해서는 납득이 가지 않는다. 이는 唯心淨土說이며, 염불수행법 중 하나인데 선불교에서 이를 차용하게 된 것이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 정토염불이라는 말보다 念佛禪이라는 단어를 즐거이 사용한 것에 대한 의문은 해결하기 어렵다. 특히 새로운 新造語인 正統禪, 實相念佛禪, 根本禪 등의 술어 사용은 경계해야 할 것으로 보인다.
This article discusses whether the name Buddha Name Reciting Seon is proper to designate the Seon tradition in the era of pure Seon, and criticizes its misuse. The words pure Seon and pure Seon era were used by Nukariya Kaiten(怱滑谷快天) for the first time. He used these words to point out the Seon of the period from Bodhidharma to the Sixth Patriarch. However, his theory had not drawn scholars’ attention for over sixty years until when Yanagida Seizan had interest in Zutang-ji(祖堂集) and took notice on these words. However, he included all the figures appeared on Zutang-ji in pure Seon era, and thus all the Seon masters in Tang dynasty belonged to this era. This theory was adopted by Master Cheonghwa in Korea. However, there are many counterarguments. It is too naïve to say that the early Seon in China is pure Seon. It is known that Bodhidharma had his theoretical basis on Lankavatra Sutrawhen he instructed Seon. This was known to the world when Jingjue(淨覺)’s Lenjia-shi qiezie-chi(楞伽師資記) was found. Bodhidharma’s Seon is based on Tathāthought, which emphasizes one mind,consistent meditation, and singular image meditation. That’s why his meditation is related to Buddha name reciting practice. Taoshin(道信) and Honren(弘忍) also adopted Buddha name reciting practice, but the first appearance of Buddha Name Reciting Seon is from Quolang-xuanshi’s(果閬) Chuanxiang-cun-fofa (傳香存佛法) of Nanshan-nianfu Seon Order(南山念佛門禪宗). Quolang-xuanshi is the fifth Patriarch’s disciple. Thus it is not relevant to call Seon from the Bodhidharma’s period to the Sixth patriarch’s period as Buddha Name Reciting Seon. Master Cheonghwa’s Buddha Name Reciting Seon designates the Buddha’s real image. This is one of the Buddha name reciting practice based on the theory of Pure Land in mind, and is adopted by Seon Buddhism. Thus, it is strange to call Buddha Name Reciting Seon instead of Pure Land Buddha name reciting practice. |
