| Abstract | 본고찰은 한국 근현대 불교의 가장 뜨거운 담론의 하나인 한용운의 승려 결혼에 대한 제반 내용을 정리한 글이다. 지금껏 이에 대해서는 그에 대한 찬반 양론의 감성적인 접근이 주된 정서였다. 이에 필자는 그 같은 접근을 참고하면서도 한용운이 승려결혼을 자유스럽게, 선택케 하자는 주장을 한 고뇌, 이념을 분석하고자 하였다. 그런데 한용운을 승려결혼 문제를 이해하기 위해선 근현대 승려 결혼에 뒤엉킨 제반 문제를 냉정하게 바라보아야 한다. 즉 승려결혼의 도입 배경, 수용 과정, 결과, 문제점 등을 우선적으로 살펴야 한다. 그리고 해방직후 불교개혁, 1950년대 비구승, 대처승의 정화운동, 정화운동 이후의 변화, 현재 불교계 내부에서의 변질 등도 간과할 수 없다. 필자는 이 같은 근현대 불교계의 승려결혼의 문제, 흐름, 정서를 바라보고, 한용운의 주장, 논리, 이념 등을 분석하였다. 그 결과 필자는 한용운의 불교근대화 기획의 핵심이 승려결혼이었음을 확인하였다. 한용운의 그 논리는 『조선불교유신론』, 조선불교 개혁안, 한용운의 개혁론인 대중불교론에 관철되었다. 한용운의 승려결혼 자유론에는 승려의 인권론과 불교사회화론이 강하게 개재되었다고 필자는 본다. 추후에는 한용운의 주장이 어떤 과정을 거쳐 불교계에 수용되었는가를 살펴야 된다고 본다. 그리고 현재 불교계에서 아직도 생명력을 갖고 있는 한용운의 논리 중에서 한용운의 강조한 불교사회화론의 수용, 변질, 영향에 대해서 관심을 기울일 수 있는 것이다.
This dissertation reviews the general discussion about Han Yong Woon's advocacy of clerical marriage of monks, which is one of the most controversial issues in the modern Korean Buddhism. The emotional approach to this issue, where only the pros and cons are weighed, has been the major focus on this. In this article, I attempted to analyse Han's thinking process and reasoning behind his opinion about free marrage of monks as well as the general discussion related to this topic. In order to understand Yong-Woon's opinion about clerical marriage, we need to understand overall patterns of monk's free marriage in modern era. The first thing that needs contemplating is the circumstances when it was first introduced, the process, results and problems from its acceptance in Korean monasticism. It should be followed by contemplation of the Buddhist movement after Korean liberation from Japanese colonial rule, the Purification movement in the 1950s, the changes made from it, degeneration inside the Buddhist society. I made an attempt to contemplate the current concerns about free marriage of Buddhist monks in modern society as well as general responses to it, and to analyze Han's opinion, reasoning, and ideology behind it. As a result of this attempt, I confirm that the essence of Han Yong Woon's claim about Buddhist socialization is free marriage of Buddhist monks. His reasoning is consistent throughout his writings such as [Choseon Buddhist Yusinlon(朝鮮佛敎維新論)], Choseon Buddhist plans for reform, and Buddhism for the general public. I also suggest that Han Yong-Woon's advocacy of clerical marriage of monks strongly presents his passion about human rights for monks and Buddhist socialization. The process in which Han's opinion about marriage of monks were accepted to the Buddhist society need to follow all the discussions regarding to this issue. Through these discussions, we can further look into Han's emphasis on the establishment, changes, and influences of Buddhist socialization, which still has its vial influence in the Korean Buddhist society. |
