| Abstract | 본 고찰은 근현대기 통도사 고승으로 널리 알려진 경봉의 성격을 조명하려는 글이다. 지금껏 경봉에 대해서는 일부 연구자에 의해서 그의 사상의 일단이 밝혀지기는 하였지만 아직까지 연구할 내용이 많다. 필자는 이 같은 연구 공백을 메우려는 입장에서 그의 생애를 원융상이라는 관점에서 정리하였다. 이로써 그의 생애에 드러난 몇 가지의 성격을 찾을 수 있었다. 즉 경봉은 수행, 교화, 불법수호, 종단 헌신 등을 분리하지 않았다. 즉 경봉은 자기가 처한 공간에서 불법탐구와 중생구제의 우선 순위를 가리지 않았다. 그리고 깨달은 이후에도 다양한 역할을 수행하면서도 명리추구를 하지 않았다. 이런 기조하에서 그는 생활불교를 제창하고, 그를 자신이 실천하였다. 이와 같은 경봉의 행적은 지금의 불교계 현장에서 나타나고 있는 내용과는 차별적이다. 필자는 경봉의 행적과 성격을 통도사 근현대사, 근현대 불교사, 조계종단사에 편입시켜야 한다고 본다. 이 고찰이 경봉연구에 초석이 되기를 기대한다.
This purpose of this research thesis is to shed light on characters of Kyungbong well-known as Buddhist High Priest of the Tongdosa Temple in the modern and contemporary ages. Key ideas of Kyungbong have, so far, been clarified by some researchers. But, a great deal of research and study on him is still required>In this regard, this researcher attempted to make the closer reexaminations on his life from the perspective of the idea of 'Wonyung' or "One Harmony in Universe"By doing it, this researcher can find out life styles that he pursued, as follows : Kyungbong does neither separate nor segregate 'asceticism', 'moralization', 'Buddhist Tenet' and 'Religious Order Commitment'To put it in another way, Kyungbong always puts top priority on the Buddhist discipline and salvation of all people. Even after he reaches the plateau of enlightment Kyungbong is never preoccupied with fame and wealth but charity and mercy.) ( Likewise, he advocates life Buddhism and put Buddhist teachings into actions)He seeks to lay the foundation on Buddhist orders and systems different and distinct from those pursued in the contemporary Buddhist realm. In this vein, this researcher thinks that it makes sense to incorporate the ideas and characters of Kyungbong into the modern and contemporary history of the Tongdo, Buddhism and Jogye Religious Order. And, this researcher expects that the research and study on it will pave the way for the analysis of Kyungbong. |
