Abstract불교가 중국에 전래된 이래 수많은 전적들이 출간됐으나 경(經)이라는 말이 붙는 유일한 책이 바로 『육조단경』(이하 『단경』)이다. 그만큼 중요한 이 책의 돈황본이 1920년대 초 일본학자에 의해 발견된 이래 한국과 중국, 일본의 많은 학자들이 책의 저자와 주요사상 등에 관해 논쟁을 벌였다. 이 가운데 근대중국의 유명한 학자인 호적(1891~1962)이 촉발시킨 논쟁이 특히 주목을 끌었다. 『단경』은 중국선종의 실질적 창시자 혜능(638~713)의 친설(親說)이 아니고 제자 하택신회(684~758)가 쓴 것이라는 그의 주장이 제기되자마자 학계 안팎에 큰 파문이 일어났다. 이에 대해 근•현대 중국의 대표적 불교학자인 인순스님(1906~2005, 타이완), 여징(1896~1989, 중국), 전목(1895~1990, 타이완), 양증문(1939~, 중국) 등이 시차를 두고 각기 반론을 제기했다. 제1부에서 필자는 근•현대 타이완과 중국학자들 사이에 벌어진 『단경』관련 논쟁을 정리하고, 이를 토대로 『단경』은 혜능의 친설(親說)이며, 다만 『단경』의 제자문답 부분은 신회의 제자들이 가필했을 가능성이 있다고 판단했다. 『단경』의 주요사상은 ‘모든 사람이 불성을 가지고 있다’,‘무념(無念) • 무상(無相) • 무주(無住)의 삼무사상(三無思想)’,‘재가에서도 충분히 수행할 수 있다’는 가르침 등이라고 필자는 제2부에서 분석했다.

Since buddhism was introduced to china, a lot of Classical books were published. But the word “sutra” was only attached to 『The platform sutra of the sixth patriarch(六祖坛经)』(hereafter abbreviated as『The platform sutra』). After Japanese scholar found the text of Dunhuang manuscript(version) of 『The platform sutra』 in the British museum of London at 1920s,the study of Dunhuang manuscript has been processing in Korea, Japan, China, etc. From among these, the controversy which is stirred by Hu Shi(胡适。1891~1962) is most renowned. Hu Shi who is famous for Chinese scholar maintains that Hui Neng(慧能。638~713) is not a author but Hui Neng’s diciple Shen Hui(神会。684~758)is a really author of 『The platform sutra』. On this insistence, the Rev Yin Shun(印顺法师。1906~2005。Taiwan), Lu Cheng(吕澄。1896~1989。China), Qian Mu(钱穆。1895~1990。Taiwan), Yang Ceng-wen(杨曾文。1939~。China), et al criticize Hu Shi’s viewpoint. In the first chapter, this thesis arranges the history of controversy and insistence of Chinese scholars. On the basis of this analysis, thesis continuously insists that Hui Neng is the author of 『The platform sutra』, but Shen Hui’s pupil presumably retouches the third part of 『The platform sutra』(that is to say 「questions and answers with disciple」). In the second chapter, this thesis researches that what the principle thought of 『The platform sutra』 is? The answers are three. First, every person has Buddha nature(佛性). Second, No-thought(无念), Non-form(无相) and Non-abiding(无住) are the leading thoughts. Third, everyone can lead the ascetic life of Buddhism at his home.
