| Abstract | 이 글에서는 천태종의 삼대지표 가운데 ‘대중불교의 구현’을 불교개혁론의 관점에서 검토하고자 한다. 이 글에서 말하고자 하는 점은 천태종의 대중불교는 불교개혁론의 대중불교에 영향을 받았으면서도 어떤 측면에서는 천태종의 색채를 추가하였다는 것이다. 2장에서는 불교개혁론의 대략적인 흐름에 대해 간단히 서술한다. 3장에서는 한용운의 「조선불교의 개혁안」을 중심으로 해서 불교개혁론의 대중불교에 대해 알아본다. 첫째, 대중불교의 건설이다. 한용운은 염세적인 불교에서 구제적인 불교로 바뀌어야 한다고 주장한다. 그 다음부터는 대중불교의 건설을 위한 구체적 방안에 해당한다. 둘째, 산중사찰의 통폐합이다. 셋째, 불교도 생활의 보장이다. 넷째, 선수행의 지도이론과 불교교학의 교육방법을 정비하는 것이다. 4장에서는 앞에 소개한 불교개혁론이 천태종의 대중불교에 영향을 미쳤음을 살펴본다. 첫째, 대중불교의 건설이라는 불교개혁론의 주장이 천태종의 대중불교에도 그대로 나타난다. 둘째, 천태종의 사찰은 거의 대부분은 도시에 있다. 이는 앞에 소개한 불교개혁론의 산중사찰의 통폐합을 수용한 것이다. 여기에다 천태종에서는 사찰을 24시간 개방하고 있고, 서울의 관문사와 부산의 삼광사라는 대형사찰이 있다는 점을 추가할 수 있다. 이는 불교개혁론에서 명확히 말하지 않은 대목이다. 셋째, 천태종에서는 재가중심의 불교를 추구한다. 천태종에서는 사찰운영에서 재가신도가 참여하고 있다. 이는 불교개혁론의 불교도 생활의 보장과 맥을 같이 하는 것이다. 넷째, 관음주송의 실천과 사부대중이 참여하는 안거제도이다. 천태종에서는 구체적 수행법으로서 관음주송을 실천한다. 또 사부대중이 다 함께 참여하는 안거제도를 운영하고 있다. 이는 불교개혁론에서 제시하는 선수행의 지도이론 등을 정비한다는 것과 상응하는 것이다.
In this paper, I will study the embodiment of popular buddhism among Cheontae jong’s three great index from viewpoint of buddhist reformation. In chapter two, I describe the rough flow of buddhist reformation briefly. In chapter three, I study popular buddhism of buddhist reformation centering on Han Yong-un’s Reformation of Joseon Buddhism. First, it is the construction of popular buddhism. And following items are the concrete plan for the construction of popular buddhism. Second, it is the merger and abolition of the temple in the mountains. Third, it is living security of buddhist. Fourth, it is to refine guiding theory of zen practice and teaching methods of scriptural study. In chapter four, I study that buddhist reformation mentioned above, influences popular buddhism of Cheontae jong. First, popular buddhism of Cheontae jong receives the construction of popular buddhism. Second, the temple of Cheontae jong is almost entirely in the city, which receive the merger and abolition of the temple in the mountains of buddhist reformation to mention above. At this point, Cheontae jong opens the temple 24 hours a day, and has the major temple, that is Gwanmunsa in Seoul and Samgwangsa in Busan, which is the point not clearly to say in buddhist reformation. Third, Cheontae jong pursues lay-oriented buddhism. Lay buddhist of Cheontae jong participates in the temple management, which is in line with living security of buddhist in buddhist reformation. Fourth, Cheontae jong introduces to remember Gwaneum(Avalokiteśvara), which is to perform as the concrete practice, and introduces meditation retreat system for fourfold community to participate together, which correspond to refine guiding theory of zen practice and teaching methods of scriptural study in buddhist reformation. |
